MD Umbrellas with Sports Teams (Track)

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a way for my high-school son to run track in the spring. Although we're currently registered with the county, we're willing to consider an umbrella school if he could compete on a team. Does anyone know of any umbrella schools (that you'd recommend *smile*) near Fort Meade that have track and/or cross-country programs? (It would have to be near enough to us to make team practices workable. We're just south of Fort Meade.) Thanks!

This is good. I actually thought you were looking for a sports umbrella that had maybe the Orioles on it. Sorry.

Generally, umbrella schools in Maryland are not attended by the students. Sometimes a co-op may have sports meets but it is usually just for home schooled students.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking. Your son is in public high school? Really, I think the closest you can get to that is a private school. I home schooled in MD for more than 10 years. Home school groups get together but I don't know if there are any field and track teams.

No, he is homeschooled. We are new to Maryland, though. We are currently registered with the county; however, I recently saw an umbrella school's website and they had a football team. There was a schedule which showed games -- I'm not sure, but it seemed like they were against private schools.

He is not an elite athlete by any means and he doesn't want it badly enough to completely changed up our plans and enroll in a ps or private school --  he just wants to try running track. And when I saw an umbrella school offering team sports, I was hopeful that someone might know of one that offered that.

Compared to the other 5 states we've homeschooled in, MD is quite a disappointment in many respects and certainly this is one of them. Generally wherever we've been, there has been some sort of organized way for homeschoolers to compete in team sports, whether in a homeschool league, or a homeschool team competing as a private school, or individual students have been allowed to join athletic teams at the local ps.

Unfortunately, it wasn't until we got here that I had a student want to do anything like that...

Some of the Christian schools have homeschool umbrella programs and they allow students in them to play on their sports teams.  I don't know what's in your area, but I'd start by calling the local Christian schools and asking.

That's a good idea -- I'll try that. I know there's one near us that would allow him to practice, but he wouldn't be able to compete. But that might not be true for all private schools.

We had a local privateschool that allowed homeschoolers to play on their sports teams - mostly because they didn't have enough students to have a team otherwise. It was not a high school though. Not sure if there are any recreational sports that do track - problem with high school age is those are typically competitive teams at this point, so slots only available to competitive players.

I would join some local homeschooling groups either on facebook or other email groups, not necessarily an umbrella group and see if they have more suggestions - you'll get far more feedback on a state specific group than here. :)

Good luck.

Good luck! That is one thing about home schooling that I haven't liked is that you can't do team sports unless you grow the team yourself and then they're all different ages and sizes.

I was surprised to see so many different home school umbrella groups on a link that was shared a month or so ago here.

I am not located near to you- but I had a couple of thoughts...

you might look into your local rec and park system. Where I live in Maryland- there are amazing offerings through the local recs and parks- including at least two cross country teams right now (in two different parts of my county)- possibly track in the Spring...

My son is a freshman and is going to be playing high school basketball through our homeschool oversight which is a local Christian school. The school does not offer track and field, however. Yet, this might be a real option for you!

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Rebecca

There are also some homeschool sports teams- right now some families in my area are involved in volleyball (girls) and football (boys) and they are playing against Maryland Christian Schools- including the one my son will play on for basketball. I do not know how it works. It seemed like the teams were based out of Baltimore...but I do not know that much about it. The Volleyball team is called the Bravehearts- I believe. I wonder if you look it up online- if you might be able to find more info...

(this is in reply to one of the posts I read up above...)

HTH,

Rebecca
