Leftyplayer
I'm hoping to add one of the science encyclopedias to our repertoire, but haven't had access to see any in person. For those that have had a chance to use or peruse them, which would you recommend? What specifically do you like/ dislike about it? Am considering the ones from Usborne, DK Publishing or Kingfisher ... but open to any others. Thanks!
SilverMoon
I've used a DK one for years, with a wide range of ages. I like that it has a wide range of topics, is easy for kids to research in, and has plenty illustrations. I'd also recommend getting a The New Way Things Work by Macaulay. NotAVampireLvr
We're big fans of DK books and use them daily. Although we use the Usborne World History and Geography Encylopedias I don't use them so much for science. (mostly because we have a huge DK collection)
MinivanMom
We love the Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia.
Curlymom
For what age? We have both the Usborne and Kingfisher. Both are great but I think the Kingfisher is more for upper elementary or middle school as it includes slightly more information the Usborne. My 9 year old uses the Usborne as a spine and it works great and I occasionally pull information from it for my 7 year old but it is a little too advanced for him. The Usborne Complete books are also good for a focus on a specific area (I'm not sure if that is the name if the series. We have the Complete Book of the Human Body). happypamama
I agree that it depends on the child's age. My 4th grader uses Usborne for history and does well with it. My 7th grader uses Kingfisher for history and science and likes both of them very well too. I think the Kingfisher is better for older students. Leftyplayer
It would be for an 8 year old (3rd grade). Based on your posts, sounds like the Usborne or DK might be best for him at this age?
kitten18
We have the Usborne. I really like it and they have some great things in the internet links.

LaCEmom
We only have the Kingfisher one, but I'd agree that's it's better for older students.
sagira
I really like the Usborne Science Encyclopedia because it gives ds11 a visual representation of what we cover in BFSU 2 and 3, plus it includes great Internet links which are incorporated into and enrich our lessons along with Bill Nye and NeoK12 videos.
