Guest emaof4
Hi,I'm new to the forum. My oldest is finishing kindergarten at a Montessori school and we're looking at all options, including home-schooling. I am a trained teacher, though I am working from home in a non-teaching field now. I have 3 other children who could continue at the Montessori school (could be out of the house from 9-3 PM). I am wondering how possible it is to home-school my first grader (who is reading fluently and has a very good foundation in math and writing) while working from home (20-30-40 hours). If we don't send him to private school, I could presumably work fewer hours. I'd love your thoughts and own experiences with working while home-schooling. Thanks! My3girls
I found it extremely difficult to work full time from home and homeschool. It was doable, but I didn't feel that I was able to do my best for my job, my kids, or my home in that situation. I, now, work part time as a realtor where I can dictate my own hours, and this works much better.
AK_Mom4
It all depends on what you "do" when you work at home. If you want it to be easier, you need a work environment that is a bit flexible and where you can tolerate interruptions. I work from home and have since DD13 was born. I work on a computer during the day, set my own hours and have lots of flexibility except for the occasional conference call. DD13 works at her desk next to mine. When DS18 was homeschooling (off to college now), he had dibs on the kitchen table. Worst case, a kid might need to wait a few minutes or work on something else until I was available to help them. When the kids were young, it was good for me to work just 20 hours a week so we had lots of free time to go places and run errands and go for walks. Now that I'm down to just one kid and she is older, I am working more hours so that I don't finish before she is done for the day. Our experience here with working at home while homeschooling has been very positive.
Sunshine State Sue
I worked 20hrs/wk until ds was 12 and 30hrs/wk after that. Hs'ing and working 20hrs/wk is easier than hs'ing and working 30hrs/wk. I've worked from home since ds was 6.5. Until junior high, I always had a bit of childcare or "after school" care. I also have an only child, which makes the schooling easier (I think) but the socializing more difficult.
kiwik
I suspect it depends on the kid. I would never be able to concentrate on work with ds7 around but may be able to with ds5. Some kids cannot do anything without your input and some can.
CardinalAlt
I work 20ish hours/week, some in house, some out, with 10 hrs of babysitting total on 2 afternoons, and the rest of the time in the evenings, weekends, little chunks while kids watch a video or take quiet time. So far it's working well! (4 years in.) I've added one online class at a time for myself, and that is straining the limits a bit... But so far, it's doable, and I think it's worth it. laughing lioness
I work at home and homeschool. It's hard to work at home. It's hard to work at home and homeschool. It's do-able but a massive juggling act. For me, the number of details I deal with and the lack of closure I have on anything is a constant stress. We are still very committed to homeschooling but I really need to work. So, yeah, doable but tough.
