BJU or Horizons....

We have nailed down our first grade math with horizons and math mammoth and we LOVE it! Now I'm looking for a spelling, grammar, and phonics program. We currently use language smarts b, daily 6 trait writing, and phonics pathways but I'm looking for a more structured phonics and a spelling program to go along with that. I've been really looking into BJU or horizons. I've read a lot of comments that BJU is very teacher intensive which I expect all programs to be at first grade to some degree. My concern is that my dd loves to do her work independently after I explain the lesson. And I have a two year old to tend to as well. SO, horizons or bju?? I need opinions of those that have used these for phonics and English, spelling, and reading. Thanks!!

I've used Horizons level K through Pre-Algebra. I really love it. For us, the lessons were very well balanced: hands on, colorful/fun presentation (but not too busy) and easy to implement. The younger grades are not difficult to teach because the concepts are so basic, but the teacher's guide has good hands-on suggestions and also suggests math fact practice/memory work. Beginning in 4th grade, the student book has some explanation of the concept, but it is design pined for parent and student to cover together. I always introduce the lesson, do example problems on the whiteboard and then let my ds begin the worksheet. Horizons also has extra worksheets for extra practice. There were times that we needed to slow down, especially in year 6 and pre-algebra. Those worksheets helped develop a better understanding of concepts. I loved having an elementary math program that required little prep.

I am currently using Horizons level 6 and BJU Algebra I with my kids. I love the our new BJU text, but it is more teacher intensive. I chose it because Horizons only goes to Alg I and I wanted to choose a math program that we could stick to all through high school. It is organized similarly to Horizons.
