Chess Strategy Resources for a Beginner

Ds and Dh have both been learning to play chess.  At this point Ds has mastered all of the ways the players move, how to defend, and how to aggress.  He does this within reason and is really progressing as a player. I would still call him a beginner, just not completely clueless.

Today he pulled out an opening and quick system to check mate Dh in about six moves.  He was so thoroughly impressed with himself and revealed later that he had read it in a book at the library.  I was, however, the only one that he really understood as the book seemed geared to much more advanced players.  He now wants to do more studying up about tactics and strategy to play, various openings, and such so that he can beat his dad.  (Apparently the best motivation for studying a ten year old boy can have.)

I know many of y'all out there have kids who either play chess or are learning.  Anyone know of any resources out there for someone not in the initial beginner stage, but not really fully set either?

DS10 and I are currently reading Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. We are not quite halfway through the book, but so far it has been very interesting and easy to follow. We lay out a chess board according to different setups pictured in the book, and think through the possible moves and strategies.

We started out with The Kids' Book of Chess, and it was extremely simple and basic.

I got my son his copy of Checkmate! My First Chess Book by Garry Kasparov when he was 5. It has very nice illustrations of basic tactics (pin, fork, skewer), a few puzzles, and a few openings.

As far as chesskid.com, DS found the lessons on the full chess.com site to be more his speed. The membership is more expensive though and we let it lapse after a few months.

I was on this search a year or so ago to step up his game a little and settled on the book "Chess Tactics for Scholastic Players." The introductory material is very basic but it builds. It doesn't hurt that it's only $5 for Kindle but I think I found some good reviews from solid coaches to guide my decision: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B8ZLKAA/ref=oh_d__o00_details_o00__i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
