mo2
DD12 will be finishing up Power Basics Basic Math in a few months and I'd like to move on to prealgebra. What are some good options? She is not a strong reader and gets overwhelmed with too much text but needs clear, detailed instruction. Would TT be a good fit, since it has video instruction and automatic feedback? Any others? maize
Math Mammoth is a favorite in our household, the prealgebra program is brand new so we haven't used it yet but plan to start soon.
TheApprentice
My older son used Derek Owens. The Pre-Algebra curriculum is one you can actually purchase. His explanations are spot on.
Aurelia
We're using Khan Academy, which is free and has videos for most concepts.
Sara in AZ
My DD, almost 12, has been thriving with TT do far this year. She is a strong reader, but has really struggled with math over the years. She loves doing TT on the computer, and the instruction style is really working for her. Good luck deciding! mc26
TT Pre-Algebra has been working well for us here too. The immediate feedback has been fantastic. I know many don't like the second chance feature, but I find it gives my sometimes careless boys a chance to correct their mistakes before it "counts". We supplement with LOF and Balance Math, and I have one of Zaccarro's books waiting in the wings as well. HTH!
SilverMoon
Dolciani fits that description, though it doesn't have videos.
Leav97
Dolciani combined with the videos from AOPS and Khan.
Haiku
TT would be too light for my dd12, who is doing Dolciani Pre-Algebra. It will be perfect for my ds11, who is currently using TT6. I think it depends less on whether your dd reads well and more on how good she is with math. I think that Dolciani is a stronger program than TT, but I also know that TT is more my son's "speed," if that makes sense. If your dd is strong in math, I would elect to use Dolciani. The instruction is extremely clear; you could always go through the lesson ahead of time so that you can explain the lesson to her and work the example/classroom problems with her. Another option is to look at the topic and find a video online to explain the topic to her, using the text as supplemental instruction. There are TONS of pre-algebra videos out there. We have used Khan, MathVids, PH School, LearnersTV, and random things we have found on YouTube. If your dd is not strong in math, TT would be a great option.
