ChristusG Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Yikes!!! Wow, I'm not sure. I assume they got the most durable pair on the market? Maybe sports goggles would be better at his age? My daughter had just turned 3 when she got glasses, but was surprisingly very good with them. She never took them off unless she was going swimming, taking a bath, or going to sleep. *Inna* Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 When my youngest needed glasses, we picked the plastic, flexible frame with a elastic in the back to keep them on his head. I don't remember the brand name, but they went through some serious wear and tear and held up pretty well. They have been sat on a couple of time too. They aren't as nice as his last pair, but those were super expensive and not a good comparison. FWIW, he likes these cheaper ones just fine. They are almost 2 years old and look and work fine. He wears his glasses every waking moment and he only has the one pair, so they have stood up to a lot of use. Pippen Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 My active little preschool got glasses and it was chaos for awhile as he played with them like toys and took them off in random places. I always bought two pair of the sturdy titanium frame kids glasses (usually Nike) and used a place that had a kids package so replacements were cheaper. I did minor repairs at home, but took the worst bent up frames back to the optical dept to bend back into shape since they had the right tools and know how. By having two pair we always had one in working order. It paid to be friendly to the optical staff. They saw so much of us that I took them in treats, because they took such good care of us. SJ. Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Where are the glasses breaking? How are they breaking? If it is at the hinges there are glasses for children reinforced at the hinge. There are also bendable glasses like these. Sports glasses are also very sturdy. Two things that helped us were teaching our ds how to properly take the glasses off and put them on using two hands and sticking to the rule "If they're not on your face they are in the case." Mabeline Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 My son has worn glasses since he was 9months old. At first he wore glasses that had the wrap around the ear things (very expensive.) Then we used sunglasses holders to tie them to his head. He really needs them to see, so he never takes them off. Now that he is a little bigger and likes to wrestle with other boys, I ask him to hand me his glasses to keep them save. I think the main thing is to make sure the glasses do not come off or are stored safely. A four year old boy will have no concept of setting them down in a safe place. I NEVER buy anything with extended warranties or extra insurance but for glasses I did and it paid off in the long run. My oldest ds broke his glasses all the time. I get my kids' glasses through the local hospital and the frames have a one year warranty. They also have some arrangement if the prescription changes within some time frame of getting them, if your doctor is at that hospital. prairiewindmomma Posted September 25, 2014 Share Posted September 25, 2014 fwiw, some stores will not replace glasses after the third break. We bumped into this issue at Lenscrafters. We switched to zenni optical and got solid frame glasses with spring hinges and titanium lenses. To offer encouragement, ds went through 6 pairs of glasses in his first six months of wearing them. Thereafter, we usually have only had one broken frame per year. Sometimes we will get duplicate frames with the second set containing plain lens from zenni since the bulk of the expense is in ds's lenses.
