SOTW vs k12's Human Odyssey?

Recommended Posts

My 7th grader is using K12 Human Odyssey V2 and her 3rd grade brother is using SOTW V2 & 3 plus MP Famous Men of the Middle Ages this year.

If I didn't want to use the K12 book, I would consider the Dorothy Mills books with the Memoria Press study guides. Those are at a more appropriate level for a middle school student than SOTW (which is geared for 1st through 4th graders).

For a 7th grader, I would go with Human Odyssey, but I do know some here who use SOTW with additional supplements. I guess I just see Bauer's history books more appropriate for elementary kids. Both are quite good, conversational and engaging.

I agree with this, especially for ancient or medieval history. Maybe you could get away with SOTW for early modern or modern, especially if you didn't hit those areas earlier, but I think a seventh grader probably needs more.

My fourth grader uses SOTW; he's finishing early modern and will move on to modern in a couple of weeks. SOTW is just right for him to read to himself at about half to a full chapter a day (good reader but on the slower reading side), and he uses the Usborne Encylopedia also.

My seventh grader uses Human Odyssey and Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, and they seem to work well for her.
