We just experienced our first language immersion hour. The boys were such troopers . At the end ds asks, "can you PLEASE just tell me what 'mucho' means?" Mrs. S replies "a lot."

Later, he tells me, "I spent the entire hour trying to figure that one out. I though it was dirt for a while, then maybe yummy. I was never, ever close to 'a lot'." He was so flummoxed looking the entire hour that we missed that he didn't catch it. There were a couple of light bulb moments, but 'mucho' wasn't one of them.

Well, now he knows!

Overall, it was very exciting to see how much they could follow along & respond correctly.

This is our first foreign language learning experience. My immediate goal is to develop listening & comprehension skills. One son is in a weekly spanish class which he loves; the other son had a conflict & wasn't able to join the class. Both boys are spending a focused hour/week with a native speaker with no english allowed, we're listening to children's songs in spanish with the lyrics in front of us, we're listening to audio board books with the books in front of us (ex: Brown Bear, Green Eggs & Ham, etc), & we're using a children's spanish picture dictionary to help us look things up.

If anyone has any experience trying anything like this...I'd love to hear your experiences & recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

How old are your boys? For my dc, the younger and more physical the class was, the easier it was for them. I threw them into Spanish and then Swedish. It can be really exciting to see how much they absorb, but it can also be frustrating for older children (especially if they are mixed in with children who are fluent in the language).

Hope they continue to enjoy the process.

They are 10 & 11. We're starting with "baby stuff" b/c that is what I need to be able to support their learning outside of the classes. Haha. My mind needs simple! I've been on the lookout for short video clips in spanish. We watched & enjoyed a couple like "The Three Little Pigs" a la Disney. We all loved those very much! We're looking for more like that!
