Encouraging response from teacher re math homework...

Recommended Posts

Perhaps this note will help someone who would also like to gently ask their student's teacher to modify homework...

Dd is grade 5.

Mr. ____,

I'd love to chat with you sometime about Aly's math.  She's continuing to work on pre algebra concepts at home with me after learning fractions, decimals and percents via Singapore math while homeschooling.

Is there any chance she could do just odds or evens in the daily Saxon lesson?

She is doing about an hour of more advanced math at night after completing her math homework.

Is there any chance you are breaking students into math groups?  Perhaps a math club or competition?

Thank you!

Beth

Mrs. ______,

That is great information to know. Let’s begin with shortening her assignments for me to just the odd numbered problems. As for math groups and competitions, we will be differentiating more with time, especially for the students in class who would like a greater challenge. I am not ready to do that yet, but things are on the way. On most Fridays, instead of a lesson we will have Math Centers, in which students will have different activities around the room they will be working on. This will most likely begin in a week or two and is great for challenging students like Aly who are ready to go deeper.

Beth! It's so great to see you here! I saw your name on the main board under recent topics and I had to say hello. No, you don't know me, and no, I'm not a stalker, promise! You introduced me to Crewton Ramone's website and I always loved your blog when I found my way there. I should go check it out now!

I'm glad your letter was met with such a positive response!

Thanks for the shout-out, Angie!

Crewton Ramone is a legend here. Such a fabulous resource!

Speaking of our blog...My girls spent hours looking through the photos yesterday. Such sweet memories of a much more simple season...

DD's math teacher upon being told that DD freaks when too much is put in front of her and is very slow on calculations while she is pretty good at grasping concepts, had no problem with limiting her homework. He expressly doesn't want her spending hours every night trying to finish a worksheet, so he'll circle key problems that he wants to make sure she "gets" it.

All her teachers have been good at communicating and being responsive to my concerns.

Which reminds me I need to talk to her science teacher about the writing burden in that class.
