Best resources for Ancient Greece w/11 yo & 13 yo

Recommended Posts

For the first time in our years of homeschooling, both kids are actually interested in the same time period. Ds13 has been interested in Ancient Greece for some time, mainly mythology, but has an interest in the history too, while dd11 (thanks to Xena: Warrior Princess) has become fascinated with this time period. I'd love to take advantage of this, since they are both asking for more, more, more.

I'd like to see what the Hive recommends as far as the best resources for that time period and this age range. Favorite versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey? History Texts/books? Movies, documentaries, etc.?

Thanks!

We are doing The book of the Ancient Greeks by Dorothy Mills with the workbook. DS is also teaching himself Classical Greek. I recommend the Rick Riordan Books (Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus) for fun reading.

The Rick Riordan books are great reading - they are actually what got my ds hooked on Greek mythology to begin with, and now we're listening to them on audiobook in the car.

Wouldn't you know it? I just sold a few weeks ago my copy of Dorothy Mills' book. :glare:  Are you using the workbook from Memoria Press?

I like Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus.  Also the Padraic Colum retellings of ancient myth.  He has a good version of the Argonauts, a story that often gets less treatment.

I have listened through most of the Elizabeth Vandiver Greek Mythology lectures from the Teaching Company and will probably hand it over to my youngest, along with several of the history series from The Teaching Company.

Rick Riordan just came out with a new Greek mythology book. We just got it and but we haven't used it yet as we're still at the dawn of human civilizations here. It's written from Percy's point of view and is a bit irreverent and modern, like the novels.

We are also using lots of books from SWB's list here. Scroll down for the lists. We're not getting all the smaller regional myth books she recommends, though, just grabbing regional myths from the Andrew Land Fairy books because we own those already. We are referencing the regional list here, which sorts the books by area/country.

Found the Dorothy Mills book at the local library, so I'll be swinging by on the way home from work to pick that up. And we've been reading from Famous Men of Greece this week. Somewhere I have OUP's Ancient Greek World as well.

Put Black Ships Before Troy on hold as well, the lovely edition illustrated by Alan Lee., Then we'll tackle The Wanderings of Odysseus!

Can't wait to get the new book from Rick Riordan - my son is especially excited!

I realized I also have the Nathaniel Hawthorne books already on my Kindle... A Wonderbook for Boys & Girls, and Tanglewood Tales, which I seem to remember as really nicely told versions of Greek myths. And I have all the Andrew Lang ... Fairy Books on there. I think we might try to work this book in as well - we love Richard Halliburton's writing style.

Thanks for all the ideas and the link to SWB's list!

We have full on embraced it, and next week he is starting Classical Studies with MP online. He is doing the ancients and greek book + workbook, then the Iliad and Odyssey.
