Jacob's Elementary Algebra just arrived!!!

Recommended Posts

Rose, I read lots of your posts about math and writing. I bought W&R because of you!

After I read your most recent post about AOPS, I feel like I should have let ds stick to it last year when we began Prealgebra. But when it took a long time every day to do part of a lesson and many tears from ds, I gave up and bought Dolciani Prealgra: An Accelerated Course. After 2/3 of it and two chapters of Singapore Discovering Mathematics, now we are finally settled on Jacob's. I guess nothing is really lost.

Kathy, you have such mathy and sciencey kids! I am glad to hear they used Jacob's. What else did you use for math from middle school up?

After enjoying Jacobs for alg1 and geometry, we really had a monster of a time finding an alg 2 and precalc that suited us! And I have several on my shelves, LOL.

I would have loved it at that stage if we could have transitioned over to the AoPS texts, but they weren't yet written. So, we ended up using a combo of Dolciani Alg2, AoPS traditional problem solving books 1 & 2 (the only AoPS books that were on the market), and Gelfand's Trigonometry.

After those, the kids were ready for Calc BC using my old Thomas & Finney text from the 70s, then multivariable calc using Marsden & Tromba, followed by old college texts of mine for diff eqn and linear algebra.

Oh, and both kids enjoyed AoPS online classes as a supplement throughout high school. Back then, they were "just" weekly online class sessions, message board problems, and a midterm and final. So the time commitment was appropriate as a supplement. :001_smile:

ETA: thanks, wapiti!
