BlsdMama
I picked up Wile's new science and I'm opting not to use it. I need an appropriate YE science program for 7th grader and advanced 5th grader. It needs to be pretty independent. Suggestions? Why? Have you used it previously? Thank you! ~Kelly
BlsdMama
*NOTHING* I need to plan a huge amount for, btw! ;)
Zoo Keeper
Have you looked at the God's Design series? (from AiG :leaving:) ;) My oldest boy did one of the chemistry books (Properties of Matter) last year, and did it mostly on his own. We did other science together, but he was very comfortable reading the text, answers questions, and setting up activities on his own. My two oldest will be doing one of the physics books together this year (along with some TOPS units, which I think would work out well for the ages you are looking for. TOPS does not go into origins, or any creation/evolution issues, at least in the units I've used.)
FriedClams
We're in our third year of BJU online science. Is very thorough, the teacher is great, it's engaging, and the kids love it. We started this year with a different approach, but my kids begged for BJU. I combine kids on a grade level, but each had own set of books and tests. hollyhock
I agree with Zookeeper, that God's Design, either the Physical or the Chemistry sets, would work really well. My 6th and 4th grade boys did Physical last year all on their own. No prep for me.
JadeOrchidSong
Why not Apologia General Science? I bought the textbook, student notebook, solution manual, and a kit. There is a daily schedule and ds11 has been doing it independently for 3 weeks now. He does all the experiments by himself thanks to the convenience of the kit. Is the online a set time each week? I am interested in this.
TGHEALTHYMOM
After much debate... in my own mind... I decided to try Joy Hakim's Story of Science.

FriedClams
What grade level did you choose? Is the online a set time each week? I am interested in this. I go with the older kid's grade. My kids are 15 months apart and both are solid academically, so we do most subjects together. Its basically a subscription with streaming. There isn't an actual class, but videos. The downside, its expensive. My kids are science super nerds, so its worth it for us. The usually run a $99 sale for the videos in December. I tried to convince my kids to wait, but no luck. Holly
I keep looking at these sets...My oldest will probably use them in another year or so. http://www.nlpg.com/homeschool/middle-school We are currently using 106 Days of Creation/Considering God's Creation, but it's definitely not independent! I believe the AIG God's Design series is fairly independent.
boscopup
My oldest used the first module of Apologia General Science before Wile's elementary book came out. He liked it (and that's the boring module!). It could be used for the grades you're talking about. It's meant for 7th, but an advanced 5th grader would have no problem. The only reason I switched last year was because the elementary book was able to be used with all 3 of my kids at once, and my 4th grader wasn't bored. Next year in 6th, I'll split my oldest out, probably finishing General Science, since he liked it. I like Dr. Wile's books better than the Fulbright Apologia Elementary books. Excelsior! Academy
Apologia because it is easy to implement and thorough. I love the notebooking journals. Why did you decide against it? Maybe we have used something we could recommend.
chiguirre
This might work for you: http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/course/category.php?id=62 They have self-paced classes for the secondary Apologia books with videos and automated quizzes and exams. They also offer Saxon Math.
KrissiK
Well, I'm just going to answer your question here: We are using Apologia Astromony for my 6th,5th and 3rd graders. Why? Because I'd heard good things about it, I could do it with all of them and I needed to do something. We have been very weak in science up till now. We are enjoying it. mommyto4
My son has just started Apologia's General Science and I think it might be what you are looking for. It is independent and much more challenging that Dr. Wile's Science in the Beginning. I also purchased the lab kit so my son can find all the supplies he needs and do the experiments on his own. JadeOrchidSong
Exactly what my ds11.9 is doing with Apologia General Science! mommyto4, I notice that your 7th and 5th graders' curricula are very similar to my two boys'. We are doing DM 1 plus Jacob's algebra, MOH 2, Apologia General Science. Ds11 is doing Module 2 now. He does it independently with the textbook, student notebook and a kit. When did you start L'Art de Lire? Does each level last a school year? Sorry for the hijack.
