Taking a Math Leap

Recommended Posts

I've got a 6 yo son who's math comprehension is miles above his application. Which means he's painfully (painful for both of us!) slow, because he's thinking. about. every. single. step. Slowness in facts doesn't matter so much when the facts are all that's being asked, but when adding/subtracting in 100s and 1000s? Yeah, we are bogged down.

Call it teaching from rest, laying a firm foundation, or just using sense but I'm setting aside our math program, backing up, and working on getting his facts automatic. For as long as I have to. Even if that means no "forward" progress this year.

This was a super hard decision to make. But I'm also really happy I've made it. So thanks ladies, for the inspiration, and the support. I wouldn't have done it without you.

Plus 10% irritated I didn't listen sooner :/. I should have slowed down when we were zooming through Singapore K and 1 to fully memorize facts, instead of waiting till we were bogged down in 2 and suffering. Oh well, lesson learned and 2 more kids to get it "right" on.

You are being both realistic and wise.

I wish I'd had the wisdom to do what you're doing when oldest DD was your son's age.  Now, she's turning 11, and it has become painfully obvious, that she knows almost no math facts.  So, we're spending the year filling gaps, memorizing math facts and mastering what I thought she already knew.
