@ Writers jungle people - how do you schedule?

I just bought it to use this fall. Im loving the way it looks as I'm reading through it - I've read about half, so far. Does she get into how to schedule it? Do you do it chapter by chapter, consecutively? Or take bits from each chapter?

I did see a sort of schedule somewhere, like, free write on Thursday's and high tea and poetry on (I forget the day). Is that it?

I am looking forward to giving it a try, but am feeling like I don't know where to start. Do you just find an interesting lesson and run with it? And what about all the lesson suggestions via email. They're great, but do you just pick and choose randomly?

There are example schedules toward the end.

One of the things about BW is that it's focused on making a routine more than making a schedule, which is why she talks about "Poetry Tea Tuesday" and "Friday Freewrite" and so forth. It's meant to be flexible and right for you though so you should use it to make the routine that seems best for you family. We've had a few over the last couple of years, such as this one:

Monday: dictation

Tuesday: narrations

Wednesday: freewrites

Thursday: grammar

Friday: poetry tea

And this one:

Tuesday: dictation

Wednesday: writing projects

Thursday: narrations

Friday: grammar or language games

Sunday: poetry tea or movie day

And this year I think it's shaking out to be:

Monday: open writing time (instead of freewrites)

Tuesday: narrations

Wednesday: writing projects

Thursday: writing projects

Friday: dictation

Sunday: poetry tea or movie day

I plan for the things that make the most sense according to our schedule. We don't always have a traditional weekend in our house so I plan around that as well.

One thing she suggests is to do a month of freewrites and then at the end pick one and go through the revision process with it and let that be your writing for the whole month. You could schedule a day for doing writing exercises like the close observations exercise.

If you get Partnership Writing or one of the other projects supplements (Faltering Ownership will be out soon) there is an example schedule in there which is a little more detailed.

My girls and I love Bravewriter!

When I was first reading the Writer's Jungle, I found it overwhelming trying to fit it all together. So, I started just adding in one thing a week, until we were fully up and running. First we picked a day for our Poetry Teatime. We kept doing that each week, then we picked a day for doing Freewrites. Worked on doing both of those each week. Then we added in something else. After a while we were doing the Bravewriter Lifestyle.

I also get the writing tip of the day in my email. I read them, mention it to my girls, and if it is something that sparks an interest we do it, otherwise we don't. Just recently we got a writing tip to make a list of ways to destroy something. As soon as I told my girls about it, they were grabbing their pencils.

I find if I think of Bravewriter as a Lifestyle, it helps me. First I don't feel as overwhelmed about it because we have lots more time than just school hours. And second, it doesn't have to be a strict schedule of do this than that. I think about the things we want in our lifestyle and do them when we are able. A lot of things that are mentioned, are pretty easy to add in, or maybe you are already doing them. We were already watching movies, all we had to do was talk about them more. My kids liked to play games, so we bought a few that played with words.

I found reading the Writer's Jungle with articles on the website under Bravewriter Lifestyle helped me to put it all together better.

Julie Bogart talks a lot about "just one thing" and focusing on making just one element work at a time. I think it's fine to dive in, but this is really good advice too. You could probably even add one a month if that was how long it too to ease in. BW is all about slow and steady wins the race.
