shukriyya
I'm a little confused by what I need to buy. The website has the lessons for units 1 through 4 free online. They look extensive enough. But then there is the option for a subscription. What would that offer in addition to the free units? Plus there are two required texts. I have emailed the company to find out just what it is I need but haven't heard back. It's all making feel rather :willy_nilly:
Dmmetler
Units 1-4 are the first four lessons. The subscription gets you all the resources for all 6 stages. I just use the website and the student book-I feel confident enough to not have the TE, and have DD use the website for extra practice instead of the workbook. Though I'm still a little confused. Looking at Amazon I now see that there are 3 books for each unit, a teacher's manual, a student workbook, and a student text. Is that correct? Where does the subscription fit into all this?
Dmmetler
The subscription is an add on-it gives you links to all the nice cultural stuff that is listed in the text, games and activities to reinforce the vocabulary, and fully glossed digital translations of the text reading passages. The last means that you need to make sure your DC do the translations on paper BEFORE they go online, because while the gloss is at the bottom of the page in the student book as well, it makes it far too easy to just slide your mouse over each word and effectively read it in English, not in Latin. It's an add-on, but it's WELL worth the approximately $10-$15 USD it costs for a year. As I said, I don't use the workbook or TE. I use the student book, the online supplement for extra practice (plus some other stuff like Headventureland.com) and an old copy of Wheelock's Latin for grammar. lewelma
I bought the workbook for level 1 and it is useless. It just walks the student through what he needs to do in the student text. It is not extra exercises, just a place to write the answers for the student text exercises. Kind of weird. Don't have the teacher's manual, so can't help you there. I took latin for 6 years in school so I remember a decent amount. I make sure that we spend at least 15 minutes or so going over the grammar about 4 times per chapter - so about an hour of discussion/drill. Most of which we do orally. I don't have the subscription, but rather bought the CDs which have the stories acted out in latin and have some nice cultural clips. My son really really likes it. Overall, a very very good program for my ds! Ruth in NZ
shukriyya
Thank you, ladies. I did hear back from the company and the subscription is based on personal preference so not necessary but could be useful. The way it's set up there's the option to try it out for a couple of units and then we can go from there. And the addition of Wheelock's has been suggested to round things out. It looks like the TM isn't completely necessary?
Mom in High Heels
I don't use the online thing. We use the text and the student workbook. The workbook just basically reinforces the lessons. The teacher's guide is pretty useless, except for the answers. We have tried so many Latin curricula, and Cambridge is the absolute best one we've used, IME. Indy loves it. give_me_a_latte
What have you all found to be a good prep for Cambridge? Minimus? Something else? Also, what age/grade are you starting Cambridge?
Mom in High Heels
What have you all found to be a good prep for Cambridge? Minimus? Something else? Also, what age/grade are you starting Cambridge? I think Minimus is great, but I don't know how good it is for "prepping." For young children thoughWe started Cambridge in 6th grade, but if I'd found it earlier, I'd have used it in 5th grade, maybe 4th, depending on the maturity of the child. Lisa in the UP of MI
What have you all found to be a good prep for Cambridge? Minimus? Something else? Also, what age/grade are you starting Cambridge? I will be using Cambridge Latin this year with a 5th grader along with Visual Latin. She has already completed Song School Latin, Prima Latina, GSWL, and the two Minimus books.
lewelma
My DS did GSWL in 4th grade and it was the perfect bridge to Cambridge Latin specifically because Cambridge Latin does not focus on grammar especially in the first book. So he was already thinking grammatically when we switched to a reading-styled whole language program. It has worked beautifully. GSWL covers 1/2 of the grammar in the entire first Cambridge Latin book. Ruth in NZ
Mom in High Heels
Oh, yeah, I totally forgot about GSWL! We loved that book so much. I wish there were more in the series.
