typing math on PC or on ipad

ds11:  can I type my math?

me:  well sure ds, I guess so, if you want to learn LaTeX!

Does anyone have any new recommendations for either pc or ipad?  Or should we just buckle down and have him learn LaTeX?  I'm not sure which device he would use for this - presumably the pc would be easier, especially if he's working at home.  If he's working on the pc in his classroom, that would take some arrangement with his teacher.  If I need to provide a device for him to use in the classroom, then I'm not sure ipad vs pc, as I have no current plan for that.

I had a thread about this before though I can't seem to find it and I wanted to see whether there were additional suggestions anyway.  Thanks!

I don't really think that beginning LaTeX is that difficult, especially if someone else helps you with the first document -- getting the packages you want in and the formatting the way you want.

I like TeXnicCenter for beginners, because of the way you can use little clicky boxes like you do in word if you forget what something you want to type is called.

I'm unfamiliar with PC stuff as we have a Mac, but DD uses an app on the iPad called ModMath.  It's good for elementary/middle school level maths, and they are in the process of getting a kickstarter going for developing an android version.  I believe they are hoping to add high-school level math symbols as well (the authors created it for their son, so I imagine they'd like him to be able to use it for a long time...)

It takes a bit to get used to it, but it has made a big difference in DD12's ability to get her work out on (virtual) paper.  She has dysgraphia/stealth dyslexia, so holding a number in her head while her hand was trying to get in onto the page was exhausting for her.  I can scribe for her, but sometimes she just wants to work on her own.  This does the trick.

I will definitely download this (though my ipad is ancient so I might have to use our new mini-ipad) and give it a whirl - if nothing else, one of my younger kids might get a kick out of it.  Ds11 is maybe 3/4 of the way through alg 1.

eta, hmmm... I don't even know how to print from an ipad - dd only prints from the PC after getting her document from something online. *sigh* I feel so old when I don't want to put in the effort to figure out technology.

Eta again, this looks very cool for elementary math!!! Too bad there are no letters. I wish they had a version for PC (bigger screen, mouse, letters, etc.)

ModMath lets you send the completed file as an email.  I open the emails on the Mac.  If I need to correct anything, I print out the page so I can show her where she went wrong.  Or to send in as a sample to our charter.

I can't print directly from the iPad on our printer because our printer is old and doesn't have wifi printing  (but it still works!  And I will keep abusing it until it dies!)

I'm hoping the ModMath folks get going on upper level maths as well - we're due to start algebra next year...

aha! I just checked their FB page - it says they are planning to add high-school math if the kickstarter works - they just filmed the movie for it and plan to have it up within a few weeks - yippee!

The writers of Efofex provide their sw for free when provided with the documentation for a handwriting disability.  I'd try Efofex first.

I think you recommended this before - time for me to take another look! I wonder how much easier it is than Latex...

Their is Microsoft Mathematics, which can be downloaded for free.

Which can be used for arithmetic, as well as algebra, calculus and trigonometry.

Numbers can be typed in, or a tablet and pen can be used.

As a Microsoft program, it would easy to arrange with the teacher, to install it on PC's in the classroom.

Here's a link to it, where you can download it and try it out.

That is my biggest complaint after messing around with ModMath too. There just aren't enough symbols for higher math and no letters for variables. That means we can use it for some units and not others. It seems like letters would be necessary for all elementary math anyway - how do you organize & write down problem sets otherwise? I'd like to use it like a math notebook and organization is one of our goals for the math notebook this year.
