'Likes' and count disappeared?

Maybe this has been asked, I haven't been too frequent in the past week or so, however has any one else noticed that the 'Like' display has disappeared from their own posts and that the 'Like' count doesn't exist when you like other's post?  Is it just me?  Did I change a settting or something?

I just have to say HERE that the lack of likes is severely affecting my use of these boards.

I feel like I'm talking into a vacuum. I feel like everyone else is talking into a vacuum.

I feel like I have to repeat what someone else has already said, rather than just liking it. My guess is that this will make the traffic on the board go up. Is that a good thing?

And I think the private likes are going to result in testy little situations turning into one poster saying, yeah, but I got THIS many likes. How many did you get? I'll bet your silly argument didn't get nearly the number of likes that my argument did.

So, yeah, I think they ought to come back. For the sake of civility.

I'm posting this here instead of the Other John thread because this one has a clear title about what the problem is. And maybe a lot more threads on the matter will get a response(?).

For some reason, this reminds me of our recent phone problem -- apparently, we've had a message on our phone for weeks (at least) that asks solicitors to hang up. "Real" people can press 1 to get through.

I hate that message. I never would have put it on our phone. So the phone company must have done it in some sort of reset frenzy.

We had no idea. Well, that's not completely true. Our daughter knew, because she'd called here. But she never told us.

And THAT reminds me of the time I left the car lights on and she knew but never told me. Back then, she gets a bit of a pass. She was only 7 (still, you'd think a 7 yr old would know that was important....)

But I'm still mystified as to why she never told me about the phone thing.

I'm confused, are likes gone intentionally, or is it a bug?

I don't think they're necessary - obviously the vast majority of forums don't have them and people manage to talk. And when I first came to WTM I thought they were kind of off-putting and cliquish.  But it didn't take long for me to like the system.  I love getting to know others by their likes!  Hope they come back.

On another forum that I sometimes visit they have a whole set of buttons...agree, disagree, love, interesting, educational, and funny.

I actually think they are really helpful because it cuts out the short posts of "i agree" and I think it also encourages people to add a bit to the discussion in a different way (like clicking the funny button....they might not think it's worth a post, but a button click adds without taking up more room than it's worth).

Really?

Boards didn't have the ability to "like" posts at all for the longest time. I don't even remember when it started but I didn't really notice it until this big hullabaloo. the big thing on facebook right now seems to be people saying "Stop using the Like button and actually interact with people. You'll find your Facebook experience is much better for it"

"Like" is a way of saying you saw the post and you agree without having to come up with something important to say.  We can't all be witty all the time, but it is encouraging for the poster to know people are listening, even if the listeners don't have anything to say about the topic right then.

I don't see it as an easy cop out.

And likes on this board mean I don't have to wade through a bunch of posts saying "I agree" (and therefore miss the meatier posts).  Nor does it mean I end up posting and wondering if anyone cared -- and if no one cared, not bothering to post in the next situation.

So yes, I do think they're a big positive.  And they should come back.  They make the board work better.

Perhaps those smug people should get off Facebook altogether and 'actually interact with people'.

Sheesh.

I assume the other poster was being a bit hyperbolic in order to convey to TPTB that she want likes back.

Um ... this is awkward ... I want to agree with this but without doing a whole post ...

There is no way to make Faceborg anything other than annoying. And having strong feelings about making it better just means you have been assimilated, so very sorry.
