Hot flashes and high estrogen

So, as I've mentioned we're treating my hashimoto's thyroiditis and that seems to be getting better but hormone wise I'm feeling worse. Last period I felt wretched beforehand and had 2 days of hot flashes. I'm going through it again this month, moodiness out the wazoo, days of hot flashes and now I'm just having spotting and no period. Anyone have experience with this? From what I'm reading they generally prescribe bcp's for this, which I'm not a fan of for many reasons, what are the other options? *I already know from testing that my estrogen and testosterone are both very high, progesterone show up in the mid-range. I've tried some progesterone cream but it seems to make me feel worse.

I don't have other options to offer you, but I wanted you to know you're not alone. And it can happen really abruptly like hitting a wall at 65 mph. Things have leveled out with me a bit, so I feel a bit less out of control body-wise. I can feel physical changes coming earlier and earlier now and be a little more mind over matter as I see the clues and precursors more clearly. I haven't seen an endo yet, but that's on the to-do list.

For hot flashes, it really has helped me to turn up the AC, dress in breathable loose clothing, drink cooler drinks (I learned to enjoy iced coffee without sugar), etc. They still come, but it helps tremendously. I tend to get more of the slow burn, with a few sudden onset, temperature spikes near that time of the month (which is sometimes a non-period like you described).

I use the progesterone cream- but it makes me feel better.

I also take Calcium-d-glucarate which is supposed to help flush excess estrogen from your system.

I drink green tea, which is supposed to help- and I noticed it made my facial hair growth slow wayyyy down.

I drink Natural Calm magnesium to help.

Avoid phytoestrogens. My naturopath dietician told me to avoid wheat, dairy and soy- which all raise estrogen levels.... I wish I could stick to that the way I should.

The way it was explained to me is that the estrogen is the gas pedal and the progesterone the breaks. Could you ask for bio-identical progesterone cream or is this what you have used?

If your estrogen is very high, could it be due to phytoestrogenic substances found in soy, for example?

LizinCA-I've been off of soy for years. I'm on a paleo diet, no dairy, no grains, no chemicals, home made whole foods diet. I do take magnesium, (along with selenium, iron (I'm currently low), probiotics, vit c, and d3). I believe the progesterone is bioidentical.

lifeoftheparty-Haven't heard about green tea or the calcium, will have to look those up. Thanks for the recs!!

I don't have any excess hair, I guess I'm lucky between my high estrogen and testosterone, I'm a little crazy with the hormones though. Oh, and my period finally decided to come this evening, last month it was way light, will see what happens this month.

I was thinking that it started wonking again when dd started nursing again at night. I had weaned her but then I started sleeping deeper and then the next thing I knew I was waking up and she was already latched on and I hadn't realized, so I didn't push it. I'm thinking perhaps it would help to try to wean her again and perhaps I could get my progesterone levels to go up on their own.

kbutton we had upped the ac at night to save money and had put a lighter blanket and that was well and good, the last 2 nights I've been roasting. Funny thing is I didn't realize how much of it was me until dh was telling me how cold he got, whereas I was stripping down!

Yes! It sneaks up on a person. I was waking up in the middle of the night boiling and on the verge of panic because it made me feel nauseated to get hot so suddenly that it woke me up. DH has been kind enough to bundle up for bed. He's always liked it warmer at night to start with (he can wear long sleeves in 100 weather and not mind at all). If you have a kiddo in bed, that really makes things a lot hotter too. I couldn't sleep with kids in bed too--the kids and DH are all skinny with high metabolism. They give off so much heat that you can feel it while standing next to them. More than one in bed with me would make me claustrophobic. And they have no body fat, so they share their heat while complaining they are cold.

My feet have always been hot, and when that happens, I wrap a wet hand towel around my feet (been doing that since high school). I've found that if I'm hot all over, sometimes putting a wet washcloth between my knees and on my feet helps, esp. if the fan is running too, preferably pointed right at my legs. Back of the knees would be better, but I'm not sure how to make that happen.

I tried Progesterone cream for one cycle and it made me suicidal.  At least I think that's what did it since I hadn't changed anything else.  It was baaad...really bad.  I've also been recently dx with hashimoto's and went off my bcp about 3 months before dx.   I hadn't thought that treating my Hashimoto's as being the source of more menopausal troubles.  I was hoping it might actually help a bit.   I haen't dealt with hot flashes...my issues are almost all emotional (except the horrible hemorrhaging periods).

I'm about to make an appt. with a local dr. who specializes in women's menopausal health.  My friend found him and she says he saved her life.  Here's article on hot flashes and non-estrogen therapy studies, in which this doctor participated:
