Movie for Native American unit besides Pocahontas?

Ah, bummer on the ages. There are plenty of excellent films for the middle school and older crowd. I'm coming up blank on something that would be appropriate for younger children, however. Maybe some old radio programs?

Same here. The only things I can think of that are positive are either for older ages, or are really from a White perspective. But, here are two past threads with lots of great BOOK ideas for your unit:

What are your must-reads for Native American history?

I haven't seen it, but "The Cherokee Word for Water" is a dramatization of the life of Wilma Mankiller, from 2013. It's rated PG for thematic elements and language, although I don't have more details. Sounds interesting.

Miss Navajo (2007) sounds interesting too and might spark discussion about cultural preservation and contemporary life.

Hmm, that is tricky.

For younger kids, there is a claymation series called Wapos Bay that might be appropriate.  I don't know how easy it would be to find at the library outside of Canada - you could try Youtube.

North of 60 was a good show set in a indigenous village.  I think there were 7 seasons.  A 9 year old might enjoy it.  I'd preview ahead, its PG but some parents might prefer to avoid some content.  And there are some episodes that are very dated - a plot line about AIDS for example.  The first season is a little different in tone than the others.

For a child a little older, maybe 12, I'd suggest Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, as long as they weren't too sensitive, I think it's rated PG-13, maybe 14.
