New online Latin option using Lingua Latina

Recommended Posts

I got an email from the Paideia Institute mentioning that they will be starting new online classes for homeschoolers using Orberg's Lingua Latina text.  The course meets MWF for 1 hour each day. There are 2 sections: one at 11 am EST and one at 3 pm EST. They also offer online Latin and Attic Greek conversational courses for more advanced students.

Experience the exciting new Latin program offered by the Paideia Institute!

The Paideia Institute, a renowned international institute for humanistic study, is now offering an online, introductory Latin course. It is an interactive program utilizing a unique, oral approach. Learning Latin as a spoken language engages students and gives them an intuitive feel for Latin grammar and syntax that equips them with the skills necessary to excel in reading, writing, and traditional translation exercises--all of which will be incorporated in this course. Each section will meet one hour, three times a week, and the section maximum will be 15 students.

The text used will be Hans H. Orberg's Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, pars I: Familia Romana. Composed entirely in Latin, this text provides an excellent introduction to Latin, including the essentials of Latin grammar and a basic vocabulary of over 1500 words. The thirty-five chapters describe the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D., and culminate in readings from classical poets and Donatus's Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millenium.

All of the Paideia Institute's programs are designed to help participants forge a closer personal relationship with the classics through extraordinary learning experiences. ooohhh! I will have to look into it.  DD15 used lingua latina online with our school board last year and enjoyed the text but she could not take the high school writing class this year if she took level 2 with our board (and we felt th writing class was more important), so we were going to just do it at home but this would be better.  And she plans to study attic greek too, she was going to do athenaze at home so have to look into the above attic class.

Some additional information on the class from the instructor.

I believe that an appropriate goal for an average high school Latin I class is to make it through chapter 15 of Familia Romana in one year--that way, they've learned all the active forms of the present tense verb, and by their second year, they're ready to jump into deponents and the past tense. Thus, I would hope to complete chapter 8 by the end of the first semester.

In order to accomplish that goal, I would expect students to spend between 3-5 hours a week on homework outside of class. Perhaps closer to 5 if there's a quiz or they are struggling with a particular concept, while closer to 3 during a normal week.
