urthmama
Has anyone taken the online courses at UC Scout? Wondering what they are like - and if it would be worth a try for us. I live in CA and am not part of a charter - so we would be paying full-price. Even without tuition reimbursement, it still seems like a good deal. I am just wondering what the quality is - and also the time commitment and the grading criteria? Thanks!
SoCal_Bear
they have extremely low enrollment. this is a local media piece about the program. http://www.sfgate.com/education/article/UC-online-courses-fail-to-lure-outsiders-4173639.php
Lovingparent
I believe the article refers to actual UC online courses, hence the 1,400 tag. UC Scout is courses for high school students. I am really interested too to hear from anyone with a first hand experience with Scout. The website is really very bare in descriptions. My son is enrolled in a charter and I am going to ask them if they have any information. I will post back if I find anything.
Crimson Wife
We are considering it for geometry this year due to the extremely annoying change that UC made recently to the math requirements. DD has already completed a lot of geometry through Singapore DM but it's not a UC-approved course and there is no longer a way to validate the requirement through successful completion of a higher-level course or SAT scores. We can get UC Scout free through our charter.
urthmama
Oh my goodness, somebody replied! I thought this thread was dead in the water - LOL. Yea- I don't think it's super popular but I want to explore it anyway. I feel like in the next 5-8 years, CA is going to catch up with where other schools are with online education - and hopefully, we'll have some great online classes for the UCs and CSUs - and hopefully also, high school courses, as well. Right now, I feel like CCs are so far ahead in CA with their online offerings and then for the UCs, etc. - it's embarrassing - it is kinda crazy, actually... Lovingparent
I contacted UC Scout a couple of times. I was inquiring for Biology. Their responses were lacking. The first email was really bare, so I sent a second one with specific questions. They responded to half of them and for the other half I got really vague responses. For example, I asked for a syllabus that would include the exact labs. Response was that there are 5-6 labs, they didn't know how many! I asked whether the labs could happen in our home. They responded that I needed advanced laboratory equipment, but no explanation what that would be. I know that other parents in our charter got a-g approved labs at home or in coops with no advanced laboratory equipment other than kits and a microscope. Unimpressed. I am not sure it's worth for us to pursue it any more.
busymotherof4
Our charter will allow classes though Scout but they won't count for A-G requirements. I'm not sure why.
Crimson Wife
Our charter will allow classes though Scout but they won't count for A-G requirements. I'm not sure why. Huh. The UC Scout website claims that the courses meet the a-g requirement. I asked our charter teacher last week about enrolling in Scout and she's checking with the administration since it's a new program for the charter this school year. Do you mind posting what the teacher finds out? We're not in a charter but I'm curious anyway. Who knows what the future holds? I was pretty bummed about the geometry info when you posted it. :(
