Lspuur Posted August 9, 2014 Share Posted August 9, 2014 I am planning on using Sonlight's old Core F Eastern Hemisphere for my DS. He is a good reader and very bright, so he will probably just do all of it on his own. My concern is it may be too easy for him. I'm wondering if I should add some other books to make it more challenging, or maybe it is fine as it is for an 8th grader. Any thoughts? Lori D. Posted August 9, 2014 Share Posted August 9, 2014 Yes, it would be too easy -- and some books would probably feel "babyish" -- for most 8th graders. Most of the books are geared for grade 5 reading level, and the informational level is also for late elementary, not late middle school. And the Eastern Hemisphere Explorer workbook is pretty boring -- read the online Worldbook Encyclopedia article on a country, answer workbook questions about it. meena Posted August 11, 2014 Share Posted August 11, 2014 I have been debating whether or not to use this Core next year when my children will be in 8th, 7th, and 4th. If I do use it, I'll probably use it as a glorified book list and just add the literature to our already existing plans. I think my older two would enjoy the books and Eastern Hemisphere/missionary focus, and it might be a relief to have the SL history/geography/literature portion of our curriculum be a little easier while math, grammar, lit analysis, and writing/research skills get more difficult in preparation for high school. rjand6more Posted August 11, 2014 Share Posted August 11, 2014 We have the old EHE(you will be doing the EHE, right?) and it is definitely not too easy for an 8th grader. My 5th grader had questions, but an 8th grader would get a lot out of it. We did not find it boring. It was a highlight. We always did a meal focused on whatever country we were studying also. Your ds could be in charge of planning those also(and even preparing them!) The books were on grade level or above (mostly) for my 5th grader. It was not all *independent* for my 5th grader. Do you mean have him read the read alouds also? There are a ton of books! He may be grateful for a super easy read now and again! momtolgd Posted August 11, 2014 Share Posted August 11, 2014 We just started the Bookshark Eastern hemisphere with our 6th grader and 8th grader, so we aren't using the old, but I think it is going to work out well for both kids. They are not finding it boring at all so far, and we are adding videos along with it to keep it interesting! I am prepared to add and supplement as needed for my oldest, using the Sonlight forum as a resource for this. Just my thoughts as we are at the beginning of this.
