Treasured Conversations for the Accelerated Child

Recommended Posts

Congrats on your new program , 8! I didn't want to derail the other thread, but I wondered how the program might work for an accelerated child. DS5 is starting K in the fall, but is working at a 2nd grade level or higher in most subjects. We are doing ELTL1 this year, which I was hoping to continue with MCT Island (either in the spring or fall of next year). I think that many accelerated kids have started Island at 6. Would this be similarly appropriate at that time -- meaning, would an accelerated 6-7 year old be able to do TC? How would you compare the program to MCT? Thanks so much!

I have not seen the lower levels, but intuitively I can glean that MCT's methods and mine are most definitely "like-minded."  I could tell by the descriptions that I have read over the yrs that the seemed similar.

The first section of the book would be fine.  It would probably be a great fit. The 2nd and 3rd sections require more output.   It is really going to depend on their strengths.

As I am using the entire entry level MCT with dd I am very interested in comparing. From the description there are quite a few parallels...although I really like the fact that they seem to be less delineated?

Using MCT for us is decidedly more linear, and I attempt to help dd make those connections. So far, she just doesn't see the breaking point between say poetry, LA, grammar, etc...I LOVE the MCT material so far, but our personal approach this far seems to combine the MCT areas. Whilst I do not have her write out her own stories, I do have her dictate stories and poems in the same combined style. Obviously the kid is not ready for the full use of the 8s material, but I really think the style will work for us in that way:)

This may be due to our eclectic and informal style of LA. We do WWE1 and AAS3 and use wooden Montessori parts of speech labels to label the individual parts of speech, clauses, etc... She identifies clauses, phrases, idioms, figurative/literal language and more. To me, it is much easier to combine the areas than to separate. From the examples, I am hoping that 8's program is more in this style for writing...

I have to say a friend sent hers to be printed at OF and we were looking through it more in depth tonight. Obviously my kid isn't going to be nearly ready for writing herself for now the longer more involved portions.. But I think that the early part would be fun to do with me scribing or her typing over a very long term project. I mostly thought it would be a look at where we might head, as I do with say Bravewriter. I really like the combined approach:)

I have an advanced K'er whose strengths are language arts, including writing. He's still working on copying sentences though. I've looked through the first section of TC, and I think I would wait until he has the stamina to write paragraphs before I start it. Even the copywork gets kind of long early on for a K/1 student (it's perfectly appropriate for the grade 3-5 student it's intended for). I could see maybe starting it in 2nd grade with this kid, but definitely not this year and likely not next. For now, he's using Wheeler's Speller as copywork and spelling combined. The first lesson was an 8 line poem. He copied two lines each day until it was completed. That was just the right amount for him. :) I'm not concerned about teaching him grammar yet, as I've found with my oldest that learning grammar early really wasn't worth the effort. My oldest can analyze a sentence all day long, but writing one is much more of a challenge. ;) For my youngest, I'm taking a "just because he can doesn't mean he should" type of approach, and I'm limiting his school work. He does math, Wheeler's Speller (copying a couple lines or maybe 16 words), and reads aloud to me from the Free & Treadwell Primer (which is pretty easy for him, but it's good read-aloud practice... he tries to breathe while speaking, and we're working on that ). He's capable of understanding the grammar taught in TC now, but I just don't think it's needed quite yet.

Thankfully, I have a 5th grader to use the program with, so it's easy for me to wait for the other two kids (my 2nd grader is behind in reading/writing, so he'll likely be 4th grade before he's ready to start TC). I know how difficult it is to wait when you want to use a new program NOW. :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Hopping onto this thread because I am trying to figure out my sequence for LA. There are so many great curricula that I want to make time to do.

Currently we are a little over halfway through WWE1. I decided to try to buy some time before starting WWE2, so we will be doing ELtL2 next. We will be continuing with SWR. I just added EPS's Early Reading Comprehension A which I am pleased with so far. Printing and cursive are both mastered, but both need practice to refine which will come through SWR and copywork across subjects.

This is what I have currently on the shelf waiting.

MCT Island (I will eventually get Town level)

WWE 2 ( I will eventually get WWE 3, but planning to skip WWE4)

Killgallon's Sentance Composing for Elementary, Story Grammar, and Paragraph Composing

IEW SWI-A

I am really interested in doing CAP W&R series, and now 8's Treasured Conversations has caught my eye. From the comments above, it seems like I could break up TC by sections. I am not necessarily looking to continue on with ELtL since I am trying to buy time before jumping into WWE2.

Any thoughts or feedback on how to go about scheduling this?
