Book discussion clubs for third graders?

I'm reading Deconstructing Penguins and I think Miss E would just love to be in a group that reads a good book and then discusses it at an intellectual level.  So I did a little research to see what the libraries offer, and there really isn't much around here, especially for third graders.

 

Do any of your kids participate in a group or club that does this?  Where did you find it?

 

I did find a few neat library offerings for science and the arts.  So I'm glad I checked it out.  :)

The library my family prefer does book discussion clubs for 3rd-4th graders only during summer holidays. It was fun for my boys.

A neighbor did set up a book discussion club for her son and his classmates so it's a closed club. The mothers take turns to host.

 

Maybe you can set up something like that?

 

Duke TIP host a book club for 4th graders and up, just something to keep in view if nothing suitable locally turns up for your child.

All three of my kids participated in Junior Great Books which helped them learn how to discuss literature in a group setting. The volunteer who will oversee the group gets some training to learn how to guide the participants. Discussions revolve around open-ended questions (shared inquiry).

You might want to ask your local library if they will start a program like that.  Many libraries are very open to suggestion and create programs based on patron requests.  We did that with knitting.  My daughter wanted to learn how to knit so we asked the local children's librarian and she implemented a knitting club program.
