s/o memory techniques for math facts and possibly other subjects as well.

Arctic mama started the following thread on the K-8 board

http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/523592-rave-i-finally-found-them-after-twenty-years-the-multiplications-cards-ive-been-searching-for/

If I am understanding right the memory method is the same method Dale Carnegie suggests for how to remember peoples names.  Making up pictures to help you remember the names so that they are easy to recall when you see the person again.

Arctic mama said her whole class in elementary school really liked the pictures on the flash cards that told a story for learning multiplication.  I am wondering if anyone has used this and what has been the long term results especially once you get to higher mathematics or even adding or multiplying huge numbers.

What are the thoughts of the hive?

We tried similar cards while DS sat in a classroom that emphasized rote learning.  I eventually brought DS home, revisited the basics, and he learned his multi and division facts in under 6 weeks.  Those cards work well for some students, just not mine.

My DS can multiply single digit by multi-digit problems in his head very well because he understands the distributive property and how to decompose numbers.  Even if he forgets a fact, he knows how to derive the math fact, which in my view will take him further in the long run.  Every family is different so do what suits your student.
