lea1
I am switching my two sons to Singapore Math. We are almost half way through CLE's 3rd grade math and they have not taught division yet. I am looking through SM (U.S.) 3A and they review the division they have already taught in 2nd grade. I really want to teach my sons the Singapore Math way to divide but would rather not have to go buy the grade 2 books just for this. Any suggestions? sbgrace
Try the education unboxed free videos for division. You'll need c rods, which are great to have anyway if you don't already own them. I actually prefer this to Singapore's presentation.
Crimson Wife
Math Mammoth "blue" single topic Division 1 work text. Frankly, I would recommend going ahead and purchasing the Division 2 work text as well as I think Maria Miller does a much better job explaining long division than Singapore. gardening momma
I don't remember what Singapore's way of explaining division is or how it's different than any other way. (refresh my memory?) Dd10 is in 4A right now, which has long division. I had already begun to teach her how to do long division before we got to this book, so I don't know how throroughly this level teaches it. I'm pretty sure it does go step-by-step...she just had some long division yesterday. Edit: it does show how to do it, but not as explicitly/detailed as I explain it to her. lea1
I have had company and am just now getting back to my laptop. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I appreciate your help. I think we will start with the education unboxed videos and if that doesn't get us where we need to be we will MM.
Crimson Wife
Math Mammoth teaches in a much more incremental way, and long division is one of the topics where I really think it is much better than Singapore even with the HIG,
sbgrace
I agree with Crimson Wife's opinion of SIngapore's presentation of division. I used the Education Unboxed, and it really helped here.
Kathie in VA
For long division I prefer to teach it as a short cut for repeated subtraction.
