X-post from HS: Online math classes at clrchomeschool

Recommended Posts

Another member just informed me about new math classes at www.clrchomeschool.com. We just finished their summer Shakespeare class and had a great experience with the teacher and its format.

For those interested, here's an email from Lisa Angle after I asked about the books used and specifically about geometry. More information can be found here, http://www.clrchomeschool.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=99&Itemid=294

I am using Bittenger texts for the Algebra classes and Glencoe Geometry for the Geometry class.

I'm using a Glencoe Geometry textbook as a reference. I also have a coordinating workbook which is simple and uncluttered which I will use during class time. In addition, I plan to begin several of our sections with a challenge problem from Geometry: A Guided Approach by Chakerian, Crabill and Stein. This will allow students to study ancient Geometry problems. I also use Geogebra. It's a free diagram/simulation product which I'll ask your child to download. I'll teach with Geogebra samples and I'll teach them how to make their own diagrams as well. The product is dynamic. For example, once a polygon is graphed, then a student can move the points around and see the effect that it has on angle measurements and line lengths. It's mathematically powerful and has algebra as well as geometry screens so I can reinforce coordinate geometry which they learned in Alg1. Students love this software and it facilitates geometric discovery.

Proofs are part of the Geometry class. We will learn necessary postulates and theorems as we go along. We will begin our proofing experience by adding statements to proofs which are mostly completed and move towards more open-ended proofing as they gain confidence. Some of the proofs are auto-graded using the access code software and some will be graded by me.

If there are any other questions that I can answer, please feel free to contact me again.

Thanks,

Lisa Angle
