My son devours books. Today alone he read a 200 page book. He reads a lot and I'm not sure what to have him read next. He likes Mystery stories but not scary ones. He enjoys Encyclopedia Brown but they are easy for him. I'm looking for higher level reading, but still have age appropriate topics!

Listening in . . .

My 8 yr old boy is doing the same - he is enjoying the Warrior Cat series alot by Erin Hunter. But he really likes cats. It's about cat clans and their lives. She has like 20 books in the series.

She has more books about Dog clans, and Bear clans too.

Waiting to hear other suggestions :)

Spy Cat series - I think there are three

Mysterious Benedict Society

Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place

Those are all of the mysteries I can recall but other books your son may enjoy include:

The Candymakers

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Moomintroll series

Half Magic series

Matthew Looney series

Books my DD, a strong reader, enjoyed last year as a 3rd grader:

The Jungle Book

The Secret Garden

Lots of Marguerite Henry books

The Incredible Journey

The Chronicles of Prydain

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

The Hobbit

The Black Stallion

The Chronicles of Narnia - every year!

Shakespeare stories from the Lamb book and the one by Edith Nesbit

My 7 yr old is the same, with one minor exception...he much prefers other activities over reading during the day.  I bought him a special flashlight/lamp and at night, he reads for an hour or two after bed.  He's ALWAYS had a hard time getting to sleep at night and is usually up for a few hours past bedtime anyways so...it was a win-win.

Anyways...

Currently, he's reading through the Harry Potter series...which I was kind of opposed to at such a young age, but...he loves it.

I'm interested in seeing other recommendations.

**side note.  I just started reading that Warrior Cats series myself and I find it incredibly dumb and poorly written.  It's really not well-written at all.  But the Kathryn Lasky series Guardians of Ga'Hoole is much better.  I would definitely screen it first, as there is quite a bit of violence.
