mathnerd
DS loves both the Science Encyclopedia ( http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Science-Encyclopedia-Kirsteen-Rogers/dp/079453046X/ ) and the World History Encyclopedias ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Usborne-Encyclopedia-World-History/dp/0794528333/ )
Mergath
Whatever you do, avoid their fiction books like the plague. Dd is an accelerated reader and has picked up a few of their fiction books from thrift stores, garage sales, etc., and without exception they've all been illogical and poorly written. The illustrations aren't great, either.
Runningmom80
Good to know! They didn't look appealing from the website either!

Oh shoot, I was thinking of buying some of their illustrated classics (like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0794524192/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER), since I know my DD would love the stories but isn't ready for the originals yet. Have you tried any of those?
Erin
What is your kid interested in? For us, that's the guiding principle. :) And I completely agree about their fiction. Do NOT spend money on it.

Have you tried any of those? I haven't read that one specifically, but I would avoid any fiction written by Usborne authors. Honestly, I think my cat could write a better story. Honestly, I think my cat could write a better story. LOL and generally I agree. I will say though that on a whim I bought the new "Animal Investigators" series. Well written, uhhh maybe not...but my kids are happily reading them alongside "better" books because they go in for that sort of thing. I pay money for pulp books for myself when in the mood, and I am willing to do that for my kids once in a while.

Have you tried any of those? I've been happy with the Great Illustrated Classics books. There have been a few where the story was too sad or too old. Like Black Beauty. Ausmumof3
The world of animals book has been a huge hit here as was the Greek myths.
