SemiSweet
I hire a house cleaner occasionally (every 4-6 months) to do a deeper clean than I am generally inclined to do. She charges me about $150 for her and one other woman to come out for 5-6 hours. When I was getting married the rule of thumb was don't tip the business owner, only employees. Like my photographer was self-employed, but my waiters/waitresses were not, so they got tips but the photographer didn't. Is this the same for other businesses? Do you tip your housekeeper? How much? Last time I tipped 20% and probably will this time but I'm just wondering if it would be expected.
MeghanL
I don't tip my housecleaner. Tipping is usually done to offset poor hourly wages (ie below minimum wage). Housecleaners make well above minimum wage for their hours of work.
TammyS
I just have to insert here......I HATE tipping. It's not the money. I'm willing to spend what a product/service costs (or do without), but hate all the anxiety and drama about who do you tip and how much. hate hate hate it! Me too, when we went on vacation to Italy I fell in love with idea of not tipping. My husband (who apparently just looooves tipping) felt guilty and tipped a few people. SemiSweet
Well, good to know other people wouldn't/don't. It's so awkward if it's expected and you don't.
OneStepAtATime
No, I don't see that you would be expected to tip in that situation at all. My housekeeper is someone I have known since she was in High School and we are pretty close. I don't tip her, either. I pay her a really good wage when she comes and I give her a bonus at the end of the year.
TammyS
Me too. Why can't we change this?! I don't know. I hate the whole business. Like above, it would never have occurred to me to tip the housekeeper. I mean, didn't I just pay her? Why am I tipping her? Of course, I've never had a housekeeper. I get my hair cut 1x a year. I'm a low maintenance kinda girl. I just want some of the length wacked off so that my pony tail doesn't get too heavy and give me headaches. It's always the same thing when I go. How much to tip the hairdresser? And why am I tipping her and paying for my haircut? And, OMG, lorda mercy, please don't let there be a shampoo girl (why do I need my hair shampooed anyway? I bathe!). Do I tip her, too, or do they share? :svengo:
