Are the WTM-recommended helps for writing/note taking/outlining still necessary after WWE/WWS?

I'm not familiar with the history/timeline but I'm inferring that SWB wrote the WW_ series after TWTM 3rd edition went to press? So, did she incorporate those skills and do I not need to worry about getting them (e.g., "Note taking and Outlining" and "Outlining Grades 5-8")? (Specifically asking about Logic Stage, here).

I think you want to know if a student is using WWS, is it still a good idea to use the outlining suggested in history in TWTM?

I did have my student do one brief outline and one short written narration per week as a part of history when using WWS 1 and half of WWS2. Then the writing load just got to be too much...or my then 7th grader started to grumble enough...that I decided to cut back. By the time we started WWS3 (we were beta users) all his writing assignments were from WWS3 and he was only reading and discussing history.

Now I am done with 8th grade and my older boy is attending high school in the fall. I am full of plans to have my younger boy continue to do weekly outlining and short written narration when he is in 7th and 8th grade in addition to his WWS work.  We'll see what happens when the time actually gets here, lol.

I should add that our writing/history schedule looked like this

5th grade: Ancient History with 1 point outline and short narration etc, WWE4

6th grade: Medieval History with 2 point outline and narration etc, and WWS1

7th: Early Modern history with 3 point outline and narration etc, and WWS2

8th Modern History and WWS3

I did not do any outlining outside of WWS1 and first half of WWS2 (I wound up splitting WWS2 because we had so much other coursework to do), but I think it would be better to do some.  SWB's outlining lessons are not always cut and dry to someone who has not been exposed to it before.  For my next dd I am going to do outlining in history and science before starting WWS1 so she has some background in it.

You should.outline textbooks and sources.  Yes, and YES.  Here is why ...

You are not simply teaching the student to outline.  You are teaching them to handle information and text.  It is very, very important to approach this as WTM has suggested with increasing the steps of the outline required.  By the time that your child reaches high school and beyond, they can discern the main points and subpoints without much effort.  This will make studying much easier and manageable.

Expanding the use:

I teach the folded paper method about midway through logic stage.  I have the girls outline reading to only 2 levels.  The other half of the paper is reserved for lecture or discussion notes.  I cheat.  I use YouTube videos and other learning videos, but the application is the same.  We do this several times a year.  Eventually, the girls did not need to break the information down.  They could read and pull out the points, and highlight text - again only to the second level of information.  Notes would be taken on paper and page numbers added later.  There are so many methods to handling and organizing information.  The WTM suggestion of outlining is what I view as only one method, but it is the easiest to implement and have the student use to develop their own study techniques for their individual learning styles.

Ah ... HTHs  to explain why I say, "Yes".

Oops, sorry! I meant the "helps" specifically, like the resources she specifically recommends by name (e.g., Schaffer's Note Taking and Outlining (which seems to be sort of HTF now?); Mueller's Study Skills Strategies: Outlining; and I can't find the reference right now but I also have on my to-buy list - Teaching Students to Read Nonfiction). I think I also got the recommendation for "Figuratively Speaking" in TWTM or here on the forums, too?!?!

Keep in mind that I'm a STEM-Y kind of person and while I have decent skills in this area, I could really use a little hand-holding in the teaching of it - and DD and I would both prefer backtracking a little and hit it all right the first time than skimming over/possibly skipping some things and then having to "go back" and re-do an area after we've forged ahead. I cheered when SWB said in her audio about her writing programs "it's like writing for engineers." And I want to know I have ALL the equipment in hand before I move forward. :) But with limited redundancy too! ;)

We haven't done ANY of WWE or WWS. Really much of anything besides IEW History-Based Writing Lessons through CC last year (last year was her first full year homeschooling). I -think- I want to do WWE/WWS but not sure where to start because we haven't covered the skills mentioned above. I'm thinking of backing up into WWE (DD is a rising 6th grader) and doing double-time or skipping/compressing lessons.

If you aren't confident teaching how to outline then I think it could be a good idea to check out some of those other resources aside from just WWS.

I am planning to have my 4th grader use an outlining instruction workbook this year. It is made for elementary students so it should be fine.

Then NO. :)

I used Remedia publications.  I love these workbooks.  I thought that I had hit send on a rather good post but failed.  I use the summary books at the same time.  We started with the very first one and completed each one.

A lot of us have found great value in the workbooks from this publisher.  You will find more than what you go to get.  You have been warned.  (I love Highlights in History too.)

Yes, the WW_ series incorporates all those skills; and no, you don't need to worry about using the other resources mentioned in TWTM.

I am partway through WWS 3.  WWS teaches ALL of the skills mentioned in TWTM really well.  You just go through the lessons, and periodically implement the skills learned into your content-area subject readings.
