Amber for Migraines?

Recommended Posts

I've heard a lot about baltic amber necklaces for teething little ones, and in passing I've heard that it can help prevent migraines too. Does anyone know of any scientific studies on this? My mom has horrible migraines, but is a born skeptic so I know she will only wear any necklace I buy her if there is concrete proof that it works.

Google has failed me. Any suggestions?

I've never heard this before; thanks for sharing it!  Personally, I think it would be worth a try.  Do you think you could take a different approach with her?  Instead of providing studies, could you say something like, "I know this sounds crazy, but some people have had relief with amber necklaces.  Would you be willing to try one?"

I am pretty sure there is no evidence supporting the use of amber for...anything...

Shoot - I was really hoping for this one.  It makes sense that if I can't find a single vendor touting evidence then that means the evidence doesn't exist.  Sigh....

My husband wore a necklace with hazelwood and MAGNETS for about a year and had significantly less migraines--I initially searched for amber necklaces because someone had mentioned them, and the website she sent me to led me to buy one with magnets.  I don't think the hazelwood did anything (although the website went on and on about how the hazelwood absorbs toxins from your skin, yada yada).

A friend with a physician-father who also gets migraines said that her dad was convinced that magnetic fields in the earth could cause migraines--just like barometric pressure and other triggers, so he thought maybe possibly the magnets in the necklace helped.  Really, he thought if we believed it helped, that might be enough placebo effect :)

But he was more inclined to think there was a CHANCE with the magnets than with any of the other necklace materials.

I need to order him a new one--the old one broke.

Not what you're looking for, but has your mom seen a good headache doc? My neurologist is a headache specialist, and has really helped with prevention. If she's a born skeptic, perhaps an approach that's firmly in the Western medicine camp might help.

Good luck! Migraines are terrible, it must be hard to see her suffer.

Not sure in regards to the migraines, but the way the amber works is basically that amber is fossilized resin (tree sap) and it has a very high content of succinic acid, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. When warmed against your (warm) skin, it releases the succinic acid into your skin and has an anti-infl/pain reducing effect. This is my laymen's understanding of it. HTH. I use an amber necklace for my arthritis and I feel like it has helped. Good luck!
