Reader411
Any suggestions for pencil sharpeners, not the $1 plastic kind, but either electric or hand crank? I've almost pulled the trigger on a vintage electric one from ebay like the model I had years ago, but I'm on the fence.
SoCalLynn
We've had our X-acto electric pencil sharpener for about 7 years now. It sure makes things easier. Occasionally (maybe 2x a year) a pencil lead will get stuck in the grinder, but I just take it apart, clean it out, wipe it down and reassemble it. It takes me just a couple of minutes now; I have it down to a science.
jaderbee
I've limited experience with a staples brand horizontal and a x-acto (I think) vertical sharpener from costco. Night and day! I will never buy a horizontal sharpener again. Not your question but just in case it was niggling in the back of your mind... ;)
AnIslandGirl
Hands down, this is the best pencil sharpener I have ever purchased. It makes the sharpest points of any sharpener I have ever used. http://smile.amazon.com/Carl-Classic-Sharpener-Classroom-Strength/dp/B00I58POOG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_op_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=14HT9532R8D1W7TX53MA

Farrar
I used to work at a small school. I got to see three different sets of office staff try to tackle the problem of the "right" pencil sharpener that would last. Here is my conclusion. It does not exist. Therefore, I refuse to spend more than $10 on a pencil sharpener. Whatever is cheapest battery powered sharpener at Target or Staples is the one I get. And then when it inevitably breaks in two months or six months or (our record) a little more than a year later then who cares, it's not like you bought that really expensive one. Desert Strawberry
We have this one. http://www.amazon.com/X-ACTO-Bulldog-Vacuum-Manual-Sharpener/dp/B000GP01US/ref=sr_1_9?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1406229487&sr=1-9 It's kind of hard to empty. My 8yo cracked the shell, but a little super glue fixed it. It's fine now.

Ali in OR
This is the one we own: http://www.amazon.com/KH-20-Crank-Wooden-Pencil-Sharpener/dp/B001U3RKKE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1406235422&sr=8-3&keywords=mitsubishi+pencil+sharpener I think it is similar in design to one posted up thread. We love it--best pencil sharpener we have ever owned. Very sharp points, always works. Our previous electric sharpener (an xacto) ate up way too many pencils. I had read threads where people talked about defects in *pencils* that made them sharpen unevenly or break frequently. We have never had any problems with a pencil since we switched sharpeners. Every one is centered, sharpens to a nice, sharp point, and never breaks during sharpening.
Guest
We broke down and bought the Classroom Friendly Pencil Sharpener. LOVE. After coming to my house, I had 4 friends buy the same sharpener within a week of seeing mine. Warning, you will have to tell your kids to stop sharpening all the pencils in the house. raptor_dad
I really like the krum magnesium ones RR sells. The two sized ones fit the large Melisa and Doug triangular colored pencils which is an unexpected bonus. If I wanted to upgrade from there I would find a burr model but a simple high quality razor blade model has worked for us. If I was more of a purist, I would look at a long point model, which krum also makes, with two sharpeners to give a narrower more precise point... I'm not sure if RR sells replacements krum blades, but Amazon does so my 2 current sharpeners should last forever, though after ~2years I have no need for sharper blades. Not bad for something that costs 2-3$.
crazyforlatin
I have a weird obsession with fine pencils because it really makes the writing/math process a better experience using a pencil like Blackwing. But I use cheap pencil sharpeners, such as Staedtler or the one that is sold at Costco.

Love this pencil sharpener so much it even goes with us when we travel. Never thought I would be so attached to a pencil sharpener :)
