Book read aloud recommendations?

I have a 2nd grader, kindergartner, and preschooler.  We love to do a realoud throughout our other things with school.  We do lots of reading of other books, but enjoy reading a large book for evening realouds. We did Charlotte's Web, and Little House in the Big Woods last year.  They loved it in the evening times!

I want to do another 2-4 books this year and would love some suggestions for books titles?

Also, suggestions for a good Poetry book any of you love in your house?

For poetry, we LOVE Caroline Kennedy's book A Family of Poems. It is still a family favorite even though my daughter is going into 10th grade this year, and it has beautiful illustrations.

To get great suggestions for read-alouds, I always recommend getting The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. Your library probably has a copy if you just want a quick look, but you'll probably end up wanting your own copy.

We just discovered a couple of poetry books illustrated by Eric Carle: Animals, Animals and Dragons, Dragons

Both include poems from a variety of poets and my kids love the illustrations.

Another vote for any of the classic Pooh books.  They are so lovely and sweet and funny.

Be Glad Your Nose is On Your Face is a good intro to poetry. The poems and pictures are silly. A good anthology is Favorite Poems Old and New. It's mostly old poems, but a lot of them are enjoyable.

Some of the books we enjoyed when DD was around that age:

The Night Fairy

Tumtum and Nutmeg

The Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook

Raggedy Ann Stories

Twig

The Oxford Book of Fairy Tales

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

Teddy Robinson by Joan Robinson

Seriously Silly stories by Laurence Anholt

The Whingdingdilly by Bill Peet

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews

Olga da Polga by Michael Bond

We did Alice in Wonderland at that age and it is still one of dd12's favorites. I also started the Wizard of Oz series then, we did several and she finished on her own. I think we did Dragon in the Sock Drawer then too.

I also recommend the Trelease book, it had several great book suggestions I wouldn't have thought of. Sometimes a book is wonderful to read to yourself and terrible to try reading aloud so the suggestions are useful.

I second Milly-Molly-Mandy. I am reading it at bedtime to my seven-year-old right now and she adores it.

Also, all of the Eleanor Estes books about the Moffats. I read The Middle Moffat to DD first and then she listened to her Kindle read it to her over and over. Then, it was Rufus M. Right now, she's listening to the Ginger Pye audiobook, written by the same author, set in the same town, but about a different family. I kind of see the Moffats as the Little House of the World War I era. Totally different, but similar in voice. Must reads for sure!

The Mrs. Pigglewiggle series. We all love them. :-)

If you can find them, the Rescuer series--NOT Disney!

The Rescuers series
  1. The Rescuers (1959)
  2. Miss Bianca (1962)
  3. The Turret (1963)
  4. Miss Bianca in the Salt Mines (1966)
  5. Miss Bianca in the Orient (1970)
  6. Miss Bianca in the Antarctic (1971)
  7. Miss Bianca and the Bridesmaid (1972)
  8. Bernard the Brave (1977)
  9. Bernard into Battle (1978)

I love these threads! They always give me new books to add to our list...My suggestions:

Anything by Dick King-Smith

Twig, and Big Susan (Elizabeth Orton)

The Littles series

My Father's Dragon trilogy

Barefoot Books...The Barefoot Book of Monsters was our favorite (recommended here) but we've also read Princesses and Animals so far.

Some of D'Aulaire's books (We've read Book of Trolls and Children of the Northlights so far, and have Norse Myths waiting in the wings)

The Adventures of Pip

How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have (stories)

James Herriot's collection for children

We've also read several of my own favorites from childhood, which my 4yo understood and loved more than I'd ever imagined she might at this age, including Stuart Little, Cricket in Times Square, Wind in the Willows and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

The Winnie the Pooh books, Mary Poppins, Little House on the Prairie, Narnia, Pollyanna, The Wind in the Willows, Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales, 101 Dalmatians, Dr. Dolittle or The Wizard of Oz

You could get an anthology for poetry.  I love Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for children.  Hiawatha's Childhood would be fun poetry for kids.

Winnie the Pooh and the House at Pooh Corner were favorites last year (and still). DS also loved The Cricket in Times Square, Pippi Longstocking, The Boxcar Children, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, George and Marha, Stuart Little, The Mouse and the Motorcycle and Runaway Ralph. I think I'm forgetting some. Love all the suggestions here!

Two we did that I don't think have been mentioned are Mr. Popper's Penguins and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Someone recommended Mary Poppins, which we just finished as an audiobook. The kids loved listening to the British accent! Dd now plays "Dowton Abbey Poppins Land" and serves us "tea" with her tea set and ds walks around saying "ello, govnah!" And "feed the birds! Tuppence a bag!" So fun!

My girls became obsessed with the Toys Go Out series this year. They also really liked all of the Winnie the Pooh books.

For poetry a fun addition to more serious works is Roald Dahl's Vile Versus. We all love this book.
