What school supplies will you buy?

Recommended Posts

I've decided to get everyone their own set of markers.  I'll put their name on it, so there is no fighting.

I need pens.  I'm tired of pens that don't write well.  Last year a bought a box of Bics, and most of them wouldn't work right out of the box.  The Bic company refused to acknowledge any problem, so no Bic pens for me.

We've moved into the phase of using a lot of blue lined paper (2nd grade).

That's all I have for now, although I'm sure that Staples' fancy school supply display will siren call to me within the next month.

I just bought a 500 sheet pack of notebook paper, and some pens. That's all we really, really needed, though I'm tempted to buy a pair of decent adult-sized scissors, because I'm tired of dealing with the dinky little kiddie ones we have (we got them when DD was 3 - she's now 10).

There are art supplies I need to buy, but I don't know if they fall into the "school supply" category - calligraphy pens, paper and ink, mosaic tiles, etc.

I bought printer paper and ink, binders (light duty ones for the portfolios, heavy duty ones for the kids' history programs, and a super duty with a lifetime warranty on cracking one for me to use for my files and notes for serving on our support group's board of directors since it gets dragged around a lot), dividers for the binders, a bunch of glue sticks, box of black pens since I only like one specific kind, reinforcements for the binders, and a couple new plastic pencil boxes for the kids' colored pencils. And lefty scissors for my 3yo. Oh, and laminator pouches. I didn't need much this year.

Now, I did buy art supplies -- two or three different kinds of paper (drawing, watercolor, and pastel, iirc), watercolor pencils, and oil pastels. But we also bought a new printer and a new-to-us computer for the schoolroom this year.

Comp books

Um...  Maybe we need more glue sticks.  We always need more clear tape.  I have to buy dry erase markers on a constant basis.

I think that's it this year.  We have plenty pencils, erasers, scissors, clips, staples, sticky notes, etc.  The markers and pens are in good shape.  The pencil sharpener miraculously isn't broken.  I'll look for something fun too though.  There always needs to be something fun.  Fun pencils.  Fun erasers.  Something completely superfluous.

Most importantly: large spiral bound notebooks with graph paper for math. The best ones are from Mead 5star and hard to buy in our town, but Walmart always has them at back to school sales. So I need to stock up.

http://www.officemax.com/office-supplies/notebooks-pads/spiral-notebooks/product-ARS21316

And binders.

I still have leftover stashes of folders, comp notebooks, cheap spiral notebooks and lined filler paper from my previous back-to-school hoarding expeditions. When will I learn moderation when it comes to school supplies?

Graph paper notebooks, mechanical pencils, watercolor pencils, colored pencils (sniff-we are moving out of the crayon years!), college rule paper, and some nice sharpies. It is looking like it is time for two whiteboards or a much larger one.

I need to pick up toner for the printer.

I need ink for my printer, a few spiral notebooks, some mechanical pencils, binder dividers, and a couple glue sticks.  I may also need to get middle guy a protractor, compass, and graph paper for math.  But otherwise not near as much as I used to buy.  My problem is I get in and see all the school supplies and feel that I "need" more than I really do.

I'm still making up my list, and trying to wait for the August sales. We didnt buy hardly anything last year so we are out of nearly everything.

-Computer paper and ink

-Lined paper?? I bought a ream of the k/1st lined paper a year and a half ago and it may last us another year, I have to look.

-Construction paper

-I've got plenty of graph paper and watercolor paper

-Pencils

-Erasers

-Colored pencils

-Markers

- maybe new crayons for the toddler. His are fairly trashed, but he will just trash new ones...

-I've got glue sticks but I may need more Elmer's

-We have scissors galore, they multiply around here or something

-I need more acrylic paint, but have plenty of watercolor left

-we tried chalk pastels last year and hate them, I may go for oil this year but I may not

-I want to buy a nice leather binder for our poetry book, but we otherwise have lots of binders and dividers to re-use for normal work

For my classroom/personal use:
composition books and spiral notebooks   hoping that Target has the 10 cent ones this year
markers   can't go over a dollar on these
colored pencils   hoping Staples has the 25 cent deal this year
highlighters    Walgreens had the 5-color pack for 25 cents last year
glue sticks      want to invest in the jumbo ones this year
notebook paper    Staples famous 1 cent sale deal
stylus and keyboard pad for iPad     looking for a great deal on this one...

I'm scaling back this year because I overindulged two years ago.  I still have a trunk full of miscellaneous school supplies.  :001_rolleyes:

I need to purchase some paper and journals, art supplies, colored file folders and tape. I don't need pens this year. My mother retired from teaching and pen hoarding for the last 40+ years and she gave them to me (minus her favored Le Pens, those are noticeably absent). No pen shopping for the next few years! I may even start giving them out for Christmas. ;)

Has anyone used Ikea colored pencils? I'm trying to find a better colored pencil for my kids that reasonably priced.

Have you seen Staples Less List? Markers 97cents and spiral notebooks 17cents all season.

Not much this year, because this is the first year no one is in public school (they required a ton of stuff).  Paper, pocket folders, pens/pencils/markers, erasers, and glue sticks.  We re-use binders and even pocket folders, if they hold up.  Did I mention I am really cheap?

mmm,

I don't know how translate it: 'covering paper'?

School-attending children cover their books here with special covering paper.

It keeps the book in good condition (so easier to resell}

When dd was young we followed the Flemish AND the Dutch requirements, so to make a difference between 'history' and 'history' I covered all her books, each subject its own covering.

As we add some subjects next year, I'm in search for new covering paper.

We used to use paper bags from the grocery store. It was a tradition at the beginning of school year to cover our books and decorate them. Now they have stretchy fabric covers in all sorts of patterns and colors in office supply stores. I don't know what they have in Belgium though. :) thanks for reminding me if those fond memories though.

White glue

glue sticks

clear tape (like Scotch)

probably need more rulers, as they always go missing

That's all I can think of, but I'll read the rest of the posts to see if there's anything else I need. I had a bunch of spiral bound notebooks purchased in the last couple of years that we hadn't used yet, but this year they have a use (and are in use already).

When I was in jr. and sr. high school, we covered our books to keep them in good reselling condition also. I'm sure there were some families who bought book covers--I know there are stretchy fabric ones you can buy--but we usually covered ours with paper from brown paper grocery bags. Then we labeled the books and decorated them however we pleased. And they could be doodled on throughout the year as well.

That is why translatemachines translated 'kaftpapier' as 'brown paper' !!

I thought they made a mistake as in Belgium/The Netherland 'kaftpapier' has nothing to do with brown paper....

'kaftpapier' can be printed with animals, flowers, smileys, pirates of the caribeans, just anything that is 'hot'.:

https://www.google.be/search?hl=nl&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1067&bih=517&q=kaftpapier&oq=kaftpapier&gs_l=img.3..0l10.2361.4766.0.5658.10.5.0.5.5.0.139.561.1j4.5.0....0...1ac.1.49.img..0.10.596.oFnGifeLO3g

Those stretchy fabrics are new, and not that populair what I see around me ...

Now that looks like wrapping paper. Is it heavier duty than gift wrap? Gift wrapping paper would have never survived the school year. :)

Yes there is huge difference in quality,

gift wrapping paper tears too quickly.

Some brands of 'book covering paper' have a thin layer of foil at the other side.

But even without that, all book covering papers, endure a whole school year (okay the last weeks it starts to wear out}

When I was young, our elementary school covered the school textbooks with brown covering paper, and that endured more then 1 schoolyear

(now hoping interglot.com translated everything well}

What fun! Now I wish we had some hardback school books to cover.

NONE!

LOL..but that is just because I am soo overloaded! I have bought too much for fun through the years.

However, I am out of glue. SOMEONE took the box of glue down and left it on the floor of the playroom. The 2 yr old had just learned how to take lids off. All the glue got dumped.

My 10 yr old would like to learn some architecture so I am looking to find something for that..but not just a Cad program. He wants to draw floor plans and such.

We don't have brown paper bags here, except at the fruit and vegetable market (and the MacDrive}.

So all those nice crafts with brown paper bags are hard to make here.

Here we don't usually see the paper bags, since stores use so much plastic now, but they have them on a shelf under the counter if you ask for them.

IKEA has these free Kraft paper for the customers to wrap their items. similar to the brown paper my parents use in the 80s

Just because it's fun to buy school/office supplies!

All of them. ds is only 6 and a bit delayed in fine motor development. He doesn't really need anything. ;)

Today I went school supply shopping! Because we like to start our school year in July, I decided to buy twice what we need so that next year we'll be fine starting our school year before the school supply sales start. (We started last week and it's been kind of a pain not having the binders and dividers to keep the papers organized.) Then next year I can shop for the following year and stay ahead of things a bit.

Today I bought:

binders

dividers

notebook paper

mechanical pencils

ticonderoga pencils

pencil top erasers

crayons

markers

construction paper

art paper

finger paint

tempera paint

paint brushes

texture brushes and fun rollers

art chalk

glue

pink pearl erasers

protractor and compass

I think we're all set for quite a long time. :001_smile:  I love buying school supplies, so it was a fun day.

Dry/wet erase markers, markers, pink pearl erasers, fingerpaint. Other than that, I have so much school supply junk in my basement, I can't justify anything else. Hmmm ... don't think I need markers after all. Ha!

(must stay away from this thread so I don't see something else I "need.")

Still need to buy: eraser tops for pencils; a new pencil sharpener; twistable crayons; a few more packs of index cards; sharpie markers; dry erase markers; a new pair of big scissors since ODS broke his

We're switching to 5-subject spirals this year for everything.  He can write assignments in the first section and then use the rest to do his lessons.  I am so over with stacks of loose leaf paper that should have been put in a binder or looking through multiple cheap spirals for a single week of assignments because DS can't remember what he did with the one he used and got a new one instead.

I do need new pens though, and I'm still debating on getting myself a planner.

Spiral notebooks (cause I'm over loose leaf paper that never gets filed.)

36 cheapy folders with brads for each kid

Sketch books

Pencils

Portfolio covers

Book bags cause the girls got excited about them. Anything to get them motivated. Lol

I think we're good on everything else for now.

Exercise books. The real ones. Not the composition books they use in the US. Botany and quad ruled books too. I will have to load my parents up with stationary next time they visit the states. It is so silly really. But to much cheaper.

When we used to cover our books we used brown paper or wrapping paper and then used plastic or contact paper over top of them. You could also use all the pretty colored contact paper. But I preferred the brown paper as it allowed us to use stickers and pictures from magazines to decorate our books. I love back to school time.
