parias1126
I think I've decided to use Hakim's History of the US as a spine for the upcoming year for my DD12/6th grade. We are coming home from pubilc school after a year and a half. I need to work on catching her up with Math and Grammar so I'm looking to just find some good reading for History and Science. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for literature to go along with Hakim's History of the US.
thundersweet
I just asked this the other day:) I'm doing the same thing with my 8th grade dd this year. We are using the concise edition though. So far, she likes it and is not complaining. I'm mainly looking for nonfiction though as my dd is not a huge historical fiction reader. Here is my list so far in no particular order. I searched here and came up with these. I was looking for books that more than just a couple people suggested as I thought I may have better luck with my dd liking the books. World of Columbus and Sons George Washingtons World (foster) Abraham Lincoln's World (foster) Ben Franklin old Philadelphia (cousins) Traitor Benedict Arnold (fritz) Johnny Tremain Carry on Mr.Bowditch Shades of Gray Albert Marrin books The children of battleship row (Pearl Harbor) Steve sheinkin books Russell Freedman books Jim Murphy books Sophie's choice Gueber Sandy

It is very helpful. I didn't realize there were different editions. What is the "concise" edition?
thundersweet
There are 4 volumes. The poster above linked you to them. They are put out by K12 and are just a more condensed, readable option. The k12 is full color and less busy if that makes sense. I'm actually having my dd read from both since we just started this series and so far she prefers the concise version. She'll just read from one but I wanted her to pick the one she likes best. Plus I like that we can add in lots if interesting nonfiction to go along with it. I'm excited that she's not fighting me to read it. She has never been a history lover and she likes this. Sandy
parias1126
http://www.amazon.com/History-US-Concise-Edition-Prehistory/dp/B0064RXJ2O Thank you! I'm not sure I'll use it, but just ordered a "used" copy for only $7.00. Figured I don't have much to lose for only $7.00. :)
thundersweet
That's what I did. Don't forget though, if you like it you'll need the complete set of 4 volumes;) you can also get the other volumes on amazon. Sandy
SEGway
Nothing to add to that list, but wanted to tell you about something we are using with Hakim's History of US. This here: https://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/Materials/mItem.aspx?id=2852 Do you know how this compares to the K12 TG/Student pages? thundersweet
I'm not entirely sure but can you even buy the student pages from k12? I didn't know that was even an option.
lots-o-rice
I am doing the same thing. I asked this a while ago and this is a link to the response: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/514996-us-history-lit-to-go-along-with-hakims-history-of-us/ I wish I knew how to be more tech with this, sorry K
ktgrok
There are actually suggestions in the back of each of the books, if you have them already. LOTS of them. Or, you can look and see what is assigned for Sonlight Core 100, which used Hakim as a spine and see what they suggest.
whitestavern
We used the Hewitt as a guide too. And while we used many of the suggested readings in the back of the Hakim books, I also purchased US History Through Children's Literature (vol 1 & 2) which was fantastic.
