Grantmom
I know there is no answer to this question, just curious for thoughts! I have been an Android user up until now and have been happy with it, but I need a new phone now. I bought an iPad in the last year, and was surprised by how much I really love it. So, I was considering switching to an iPhone. My two choices with the current discount that I've narrowed it down to are either iPhone 5s or Samsung Galaxy S5. My only concern with the iPad, which makes me wonder if this could also happen with the iPhone, is that I use Gmail, and sometimes the iPad mixes up conversation threads. It will very infrequently group emails together that are not actually in the same conversation. I have never ever had this issue on my PC or my Android phone with gmail. But one time, I was replying to an email on the iPad, and it grouped a completely different set of emails with the email to which I was replying. So, it had copied the text of another, completely different, email in the reply. It would have been very, very bad if I had not realized this at the very last second before I hit send. Luckily I did, but there was very personal information that should not have gone to the other sender, and if I had been in a hurry, I may not have seen it. Ever since then, I am very anxious whenever I reply to emails from my iPad. Also, I use Google a lot for email, calendar, drive, etc, so I am wondering if I should just stick with what I know. Thoughts or opinions? What do you like?
AlmiraGulch
I've never had that weird thing happen with my iPhone. Odd. I'd say you'll be fine with either. There are several threads about this very thing (some recently) that have some good opinions. I happen to be an iPhone user and would not switch. My husband prefers the Android operating system, and today just got an LG-2. He loves it. For what it's worth, the iPhone 6 will likely be coming out in September, which will drive down the price of the 5s. My sister has the Galaxy S5 and loves it. MotherGoose
I've had it happen before, and it's because the same subject is given for all the emails. If you love your ipad you'll love your iphone. DH has an android and the only positive thing I can say about it is that it has better autocorrect :)
sheryl
DH and I have/prefer Andriods!
Grantmom
Well, but it happened with emails that did not have the same subject line, that were between completely different people. It was pretty scary to me, but luckily I realized it.
Lady Florida.
Also, I use Google a lot for email, calendar, drive, etc, so I am wondering if I should just stick with what I know. Thoughts or opinions? What do you like? Everyone is going to answer based on experience and preference. I had an iPhone, and switched to an Android based one (Samsung Galaxy S4) last fall. I've been very happy with the change. Ds also switched, and we're going to get dh to switch when he can upgrade in September. Which leads me to the quoted part: We all use Google calendar, gmail, Tasks, etc. Dh has trouble with them on his iPhone. He can't get his calendar to sync properly, and usually has to actually go to the website from his phone in order to see his calendar and make changes. This was probably intentional either on the part of Apple, Google, or both.

You will find people happy and unhappy with both choices. I doubt you'll hate the choice you make. I didn't hate my iPhone, but I wanted more freedom. I'm happy with the switch. I probably would also have been happy to get another iPhone. Most people I know with smart phones like what they have. A few wish they went with the other choice (whichever one that was), but I think they're in the minority.
ChristyB in TN
I thought my droid was fine until my husband got an iPhone and I then needed to run over my droid with my car. It is nice that my iPhone and iPad are synced. You will like it, too.
Mrs Mungo
I love my iPhone and the fact I can sync things between my computer, phone and iPad very easily.
SemiSweet
I was a diehard android user, had 4 different phones and loved all but one. Then I got irritated that they all seem to slow way down around 18-20 months old so I started looking at other options, specifically I was going to get an iPad and a dumb phone. I love my iPad so much I got an iPhone and have not regretted it at all, but talk to me again when it's 2 years old. I do not like being forced to buy the latest and greatest because they run an update that permanently messes it up. I want to keep a phone until I break it because they are not manufactured ethically, getting one every two years really bothers me, but that's what many contracts are for, so the companies work together to make sure you need one at the end of those 2 years. Χάων
I just switched to an iPhone. I think it depends on what you use it for. I loved the widgets I could put on my samsung. I had a calendar one that was perfect, one for weather and I had a couple of smaller widgets for traffic alerts. The iPhone has no widget capabilities and accessing my google calendar is a pain. The only reason I got an iPhone is for audio books since my car is compatible with idevices. I have another 10 days to decide and. I am seriously considering taking it back and buying a used iPod for books. My entire reason for a smart phone in the first place was because I needed to be able to access my google calendar during the day to add events and check appointments at a glance. SemiSweet
That is strange, my google calendar links right onto my iPhone (and Facebook) calendars. I wonder why yours isn't linking correctly.
Χάων
Added info: I can only add a handful of google contacts unless I pay for an app. I have all my conacts backed up in gmail. I cannot start entering someone's name or number and have the number pop up. While these are seemingly little things they are the little things that matter to me. Calendar at a glance when I look at my phone is a high priority. Siri is a low priority. Easy access to my full contact list is important to me. Easy dialing is important. And so on. SemiSweet
That is odd, I haven't tried all that but it sounds irritating for sure. I'd probably take it back over something like that. I don't like Siri much. Dh just got a google phone and he loves that thing, claims it's the best phone he's ever had, coming from a galaxy S3 and a couple other droids. sheryl
One more thing..... I "do" agree with pp's saying that it's a personal choice/preference. However, I don't agree that you may be happy with "any" interface. I went to our local VZ. store and asked tons of questions (asked a lot here too in a thread I started last year) to learn about the differences. Quickly I learned that from a visual perspective I did NOT like Apple (Iphones) and Windows! When I saw the Android, that is what I could "understand". My eyes liked the layout/interface etc. Dh has Samsung Galaxy 3 and I have a S.G. 4 only b/c it was free. My friend's son just got a S.G. 5 and he said there is not a big difference b/t the 5 and 4. There are minor differences but not big ones b/t my dh's and my phones.....the 3 and 4. HTH! My sister, her dh and dd all have IPhones and LOVE them. Why, I don't know. LOL! IPhones "seem" to be pushed more through marketing. I don't know if they have the lion's market or not. Still, bottom line, it boils down to what you feel comfortable with in terms of hand/eye coordination so to speak.

Right, but in this case she already has an Android OS phone that she likes, plus an iPad that she likes. So, she already basically knows that she'll like either. Allearia
As for the google calendar, I tried several calendar apps for the ipad that would sync with it before I found one I really liked. The one I picked happens to be the Readdle one just called Calendars, but you may just have to try a few. Since you love your ipad, I would think getting an iPhone and finding ways to make your high priority features work for you is the way to go. I just have a dumb phone but my Dh has an ipad and iPhone and loves the way everything is seamlessly synced across both. I actually hate the gmail conversation thing and although I have been working with the gmail app to organize my email I usually just write emails within the regular ipad email app. Are there other apps that work with gmail or other settings or features you can use to make sure it works the way you intend? I was amazed when I was looking at the calendar options how many discussions there were and the variety of apps that on the surface seemed similar but really filled different needs. Erin
I have a small Apple farm going (2 desktops, a laptop, 3 iPods, and soon, an iPad mini). To me, it was natural to get an iPhone, but they were SOOO expensive so I went with Android for several years. I finally got a close-out 4S on eBay last summer and have never looked back. All of my iToys are auto-synced with the computers. At first I had everything connected through Google also, as that's what my Android did, but I've slowly dropped that and gradually shifted over to everything Apple. They just mindlessly keep up with each other. To the system, I honestly can't say that I noticed much of a difference. iPhone seems more stable, but that could merely be my perception. To be sure it's more intuitive for me as there are so many processes that are identical across devices.
Lady Florida.
I use Google calendar and I haven't had any problems with it syncing to either one of the iPads. It's a common enough problem that Google has information about it. They recommend an app (CalDav?) to make it easier. It also comes up in a search as being a common problem. Lady Florida.
Those of you who have no problem with your google calendars on an iPhone, do you share calendars with anyone else? I think dh has the most trouble when trying to view my or ds' calendar. We all have separate google accounts/calendars, but we share with each other so we can keep up with who has what scheduled. I think that might be the biggest problem.
