madteaparty
If you use these, could you tell me whether you use them on grade level (so the book that has 5 on it used at the time you go through the level 5 work/textbook) and so on. We do CWP about a year behind the books of the same level, fwiw. Thanks!
Farrar
You mean the Fan-Math ones? We started using them this year for fourth grade. We're using it on grade level. When we did CWP, we did it a year behind. I have seen some people say they're much easier, but I haven't found them to be majorly so. They're a little easier. There are fewer problems. I think the problems are less convoluted so it's hard to say if that's what makes them easier or just better written or if the math is just a little easier. With the CWP my biggest problem in using it became that I couldn't do the problems sometimes because I wasn't sure what they were even asking or I couldn't understand the information they were giving. And if you didn't understand, there was no way to reword because the only information beyond the problem itself is the answer. The Process Skills in Problem Solving books also include the solution spelled out in the back, though I haven't needed it too often.
madteaparty
Hi, yes, fan math. I found them slightly (and only very slightly) easier than CWP for 4 but finding the 5th grade ones a bit of a mixed bag for us, some on par, and some quite a bit more difficult. I have to jump around in sections.
sbgrace
We do FAN math followed by the CWP, both a year behind with one child. The other one ends up in FAN math at grade level, because he works through the books quicker. I see the FAN math as teaching, and the CWP as practice. Some of the FAN math are just as challenging as CWP in my opinion, there are just less problems over-all. I think the over-all problem quality and presentation in FAN math is superior. This makes the problems less confusing, even if the difficulty is equivalent.

happycc
Yes we do FAN math before CWP. We got way way behind due to having baby and preschooler and my kids just struggled with the problems. They were in school for the first couple of years and we had to back track a lot. We are using a Singapore tutor now via Skype and they are finally moving along because Singapore math makes my head batty. I love it and think it is powerful and wished that I learned math that way but my brain just doesn't work that way and it takes a long time for me to solve a problem and then to explain it ...forget it. So this lady Sara is great. She really does a good job explaining things to my kids. So my 10yrs old is doing Fan Math 2 and CWP 2. My 6th graders are doing CWP 3 and starting Fan Math 4. Again WAY WAY behind but moving forward. With Sara now a book can be done within a few weeks whereas prior, a year just to complete. ;)
Wildiris
Thanks for this thread. I was thinking I needed to add Horizons Math for review, but a combination of CWP and Process Skills might be better.
