Do you match up Classical Conversations with your other curricula?

How do you use Classical Conversations...the Foundations level?  Do you treat it just as memory work and do all of your other curricula independent of it?  Or do you try to match it up so that what you're doing in CC syncs with what you're learning throughout the week?

 

In CC this coming year we will be covering American History for our history memory work and Anatomy for our science memory work.  But the core curriculum I want to use outside of CC will cover World History/Ancients (for history) and Earth Science and Space (for science).

 

Do you have experience with doing things this way and did you have any problems?  Is it too confusing for the kids?  Thanks in advance for any comments/input!

I would go crazy trying to match them up. This year we just so happen to be doing American history for our "core" but I think it would be so hard to match it up perfectly over 3 cycles. That would mean covering all of world history in just 3 years, which seems like too much to me! You can make as much or as little of CC as you want. We've only done it one year but we just used it for memory work-- didn't really build on it outside of class. However, if you look up a blog called "Half a Hundred Acre Wood", she has done a huge amount of research on how to add literature to expand on what they're learning in CC.

I don't match it up, but I read my kids one world history overview book and a similar type of American history book every year. That way at some point during the year we are reading about the general history content of whichever CC cycle we are doing.

 

I also use science programs which integrate biology, physics, chemistry, and earth/space so that the CC science memory work does not seem disconnected.

What ages do you have?

 

I'll have a third grader this year, and for the first time I'll be attempting more of sync.  In the past, we've just followed rabbit trails the memory work introduced and listened to "the next thing" from our SOTW CDs.  

 

This year, We'll be doing Vol. 3 SOTW, which isn't limited to American history, but covers 1600-1850.  I will not sync our formal history study to the CC work, but I am working on a reading list to accompany the memory work.  Biographies from series like A Childhood of Famous American, Getting to Know Your Presidents, etc.

 

For science, we have an anatomy book (Usborne?).  We'll look up each week's anatomy focus, read/discuss, and do some narrating/dictation/drawing.  I'll be trying some experiments from Adventures with Atoms and Molecules to give some context to the memory work about the atomic number, elements (by number and mass), etc.  I haven't even started on the origins portion of the memory work, but thats at the end of the year I think.

I found it too difficult. Our first year with CC was a Year 3 rotation and, in spite of my awesome plans ( :tongue_smilie:),  we ended up following CC's lead completely.

 

Ultimately, this one-foot-in-two-camps conflict is what led us out of CC. I couldn't treat CC as supplemental only because I don't believe in memory work outside of context, but I didn't like CC enough to let it drive my entire school year either.

I am thinking about joining CC this year with my daughter and possibly son as well- we were going to be doing SOTW 1 for history, but if we join CC would that be too confusing? Maybe refocus on Ancients next year when my daughter is in 2nd instead and just do American history this year? I'm not sure. If we do American history, I don't think I would plan to match it up weekly with CC, but I have never done this before so it's all new to me if we end up doing it this year.

I only have one kid, but if your eldest is doing Ancients next year, I would have DD do Ancients regardless of what CC cycle was on tap just to keep things synchronous in the home.  It's nice to have CC line up with the period of history you study, but I wouldn't make my life difficult for the sake of it.

 

ETA...Just read your signature and misunderstood your situation... Start with American history if you do CC.  Your daughter will appreciate the context, and certainly your son if he joins you.

My son will be going to a small private school 3 days a week, and then joining us for CC one day, and the extra day is our therapy/field trip day. So the history is really the beginning for my daughter, so starting with American isn't a huge deal. I was just excited about SOTW :)
