Child in immersion classroom, how to improve writing in both languages?

Recommended Posts

My first grader is in a French immersion classroom.  He will be in grade 2 in the fall.  I would like to work on writing in English and in French this summer, but I don't know where to start.  He did not have any English writing instruction this year.  In French, the writing instruction was Daily Five style with word walls and worksheets.

I speak French fairly well if that matters.  He is a strong reader in English and reads above grade level for a French immersion student in French.

Any ideas?

I am thinking of using two of those notebooks with the top half blank for a picture and the bottom half with wide lines.

What if we alternated days, doing copywork in French one day and free writing in English the other?   He likes to draw so I would have him illustrate his writing afterwards as a positive reinforcement.

I am also working on handwriting with this kid this summer and he has limited stamina for writing so I want something short and efficient.

Any recommendations on something for me to read about teaching writing (other than the WTM)?  Any other suggested approaches or curriculum suggestions?

At this age reading and copywork will likely do more for building writing ability than composition practice. Copywork is much more than handwriting, it also teaches sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Reading helps build a child's vocabulary and sense of language structure as well as filling their minds with the patterns of good writing. Children need all these skills experience of language to begin to develop good writing skills themselves.
