UKLondon-Dad
I have just purchased book 1 of the Cambridge Latin Course. I would like to hear your views on it if you have used it, and also ways to enhance the course, be it through websites you have found, (please list!), or other ways. Thank you. NoPlaceLikeHome
Cambridge latin does have an online offering for Book 1 and perhaps others that was very inexpensive. We did not have time to use it much since we afterschool our ds. The Cambridge Latin book is interesting but seems to lack in grammar IMHO. I took 4 years of Latin a long time ago. The Cambridge Latin book is more of an immersion experience than parts to whole experience which emphasizes grammar. I learned via the latter way at a jesuit prep school. Our Latin teacher said the main purpose of learning Latin was to learn English grammar better and I agree so I prefer parts to whole. I think there are "So You Really Want to Learn Latin" series in Britain. I will have to try and hunt down the links. I did purchase First Form Latin from Memoria Press which I think were fantastic in their explanations.
kiwik
The So you really want to learn series is from Galore Park. They used to have a good website but they have just changed hands/merged whatever and their new website is horrible on my phone - may be OK on a PC. Book Depository stock them but being in the UK that might not be the cheapest option.
Julie of KY
To supplement Cambridge Latin, I really like their online subscription. You pay for access for one year. It has the stories you are reading, an online dictionary, various online quizzes, and lots of supplemental stuff.
Laura Corin
I found Galore Park Latin Prep much easier to use as a non-specialist than Cambridge Latin. I learned Latin myself at school using Cambridge, and my teacher added in a lot of explicit grammar that wasn't in the book. Now my boys are at school they are also using Cambridge, but again their Latin teacher is adding in a lot. When I taught my boys Latin myself, I didn't feel qualified to add in the extras that they needed, so I went with Latin Prep, which has all that you need right there on the page. There are samples on this page. L
G5052
As the others have said, I would have a tough time teaching just from Cambridge because of the lack of grammar. I taught with Henle locally, and that worked even though I'm not strong in Latin because the grammar is so explicit. The local public schools use Cambridge, but that is with a trained Latin teacher. They also emphasize culture and fluency in reading more than grammar. My youngest is in classes that use Wheelock as the base, and Cambridge as supplementary reading. That works too. Dmmetler
We use Cambridge, because my DD is a whole-Part learner, and it seems to work for her. She had no retention from LFC until I added CLC. I strongly suggest the online subscription (which goes through all stages), but if you use it have your DC do the translation first, because the online version lets you translate each word by mousing over it, and fhat's just too easy. I moved to using Wheelock's at stage 3.
