Could I hear some recent reviews on the accredited Abeka Academy for Elementary grades? Considering going from piecing together to something more structured like this.

We've used Abeka Academy in the past - not the accredited version, just the "keep your own records" version.

My kids did well and I found that as long as I was diligent and kept up with grading all of their daily work, test, quizzes, etc. that they stayed motivated with getting it all done. And there was a LOT of daily work, tests, and quizzes. It is also rather time consuming - a large part of the day was spent in front of the tv. I also found the quality of the teachers varied. Some were very good and really kept their classes moving along and engaged. But a few were so dry and boring that I let my kids just work through the text by themselves rather than be subjected to the daily droning of the teacher.

Wait, is this for younger grades? The youngest grade we've used was third, and that was back in '98 or '99. More recently we have used a few high school courses and enjoyed them - American Government with Mr. McBride and... I'm blanking on the other one.

My sil has used Abeka with all her kids and it has been a good fit for them. Her children went to ps for one year and had no problem at all with the ps curriculum.

Does this help at all?

In all the years since I started hsing (1982) the people who were most likely to be burned out and put their children back in school--sometimes by Christmas--were almost always people whose dc were enrolled in ABeka Academy...not just using all ABeka, but enrolled in the Academy. Some manage it, some even do it for all the years they homeschooled, but more than likely when someone told me she had put her children in school because they all hated it, she had enrolled her children in the Academy. This was true before there was such a thing as the video/DVD/on-line option, too.

I work full time and my husband works full time also. We work opposite shifts so homeschooling works for us but we need something like abeka academy.

There are other choices.

I have not heard the same burn-out stories from people who use BJUP's Academy of Home Education. It is not accredited, but the truth is that (1) accreditation for elementary levels is completely unnecessary, and (2) it's not that useful for high school, either.

Or there's Oak Meadow, which is accredited but is a totally different kind of animal than ABeka. Or Clonlara.

I'm also looking at BJU online and Oak Meadow says online is currently unavailable.
