From homeschool to public - questions to ask?

Recommended Posts

We are in the midst of deciding whether DS13 should go to a "real" school for 8th, in preparation for high school. Lots of pros and cons there, but I thought I'd ask this group - what questions should I ask of the VP at the middle school? A couple I have thought of:

- Are there specific grad requirements for middle school? Will DS's 6th/7th grade homeschool work satisfy them?

- What is needed for him to qualify for the high-school level 8th grade classes (Algebra I, English I)? Portfolio or specific testing?

I'm also interested in their attendance policies and any options for combining with online school.

Thanks.

PE policy

Book fees

8th grade overnight field trip

How bullying is handled

Lock down policy (there was an armed robbery nearby with the suspect not found)

School clothes policy (mine has a ban on local gang colors which is black tops with black pants/skirts)

Science fair project (mine makes it count as part of science grade from 5th grade onwards. K-8 school)

Policy on tardiness. Mine considered my kid late if his teacher took attendance a few minutes before the final bell even if he was in class on time.

How music lessons are handled. (Mine requires most kids to rent a band instrument from outside as there isn't enough for everyone)

No graduation requirements that I know of. All the 8th graders were promoted. Parents had to sign a form for cellphones usage and computer usage.

Am I right in thinking 8th is the last year of middle school there. It may be rather a hard grade to go in at as the others will have formed cliques and may be throwing their weight round as the senior kids in school. Unless there is a particular skill he needs I would just wait until the next year. He really shouldn't need a year of practice in how to get in line and use a locker and lunch room.
