BrandonMommy
Should I delay one or can it be done if scheduled a certain way? The half day woud need to include math, time for readalouds, independent reading, religion and science/history/art. Too much? ondreeuh
I don't know your situation, but are you saying your child will attend a brick & mortar school for half the day, and you are doing the rest? You can be flexible about your timing - read alouds at bedtime, art on the weekends, alternate science & history in the afternoon ... As for your LA, I am not familiar with the levels of AAR, but I *think* you can delay AAS until after you are done with reading instruction. So you would just have reading, writing, and grammar. WWE and FLL are gentle so I don't think it's too much.
kiwik
Do you mean he is going to a b&m school half day but you are doing everything at home? Or is it you have a very restricted time to teach?
FriedClams
We never went past a half day for school through about 5th grade! We did read alouds at bedtime, but even still, bookwork never took that long. I'd use FLL - mostly oral, deceptively simple, all they need to know. boscopup
Our full first grade day was always 1.5-2 hours. I didn't use two programs for phonics at the same time though. My oldest did AAS by itself, middle child did R&S Phonics and Reading (no spelling), and youngest will probably be using LOE (at least he'll use it for K, but he's already reading). If you are still needing AAR, I'd put off AAS a bit. FLL only took us about 5 minutes in first grade. WWE took about 15 minutes. AAS took about 20 minutes. ~Victoria~
I don't think it's too much. Doesn't AAR recommend to add AAS at level 2 or something? We are doing easy readers, WWE with hand picked literature, and AAS for our English studies. (ETA: we finished up PAL reading this year) I was planning on doing FLL, but after reading a lot of forums I decided that I would just cover nouns and verbs while I do WWE and count it as good. I will hold off on FLL until 3rd grade because it seems that all the info covered in 1 and 2 will be covered in the first part of 3.
EmilyGF
I'd skip FLL unless you passionately want to use it. I skipped it with my kids because it drove me nuts and neither has had any problem beginning at their grade level (2nd w/ FLL2 for my daughter, 3rd w/ FLL3 for my son). I actually only used FLL2 with my daughter since I owned it and she didn't want to be left out. Since you have younger kids, I suggest more read alouds and less FLL1. AimeeM
I don't think you need to choose, honestly. A full first grade day, homeschooling, isn't comparable to a day in public/private first grade. I'm not sure about your choices, because I have no experience with those materials, but we use PAL Reading, Seton handwriting, read alouds for history, science, and religion, and a CLE/Miquon combo for math, for kindergarten. It takes a couple hours, tops. Next year, for grade 1, I only anticipate adding in PAL Writing, and I can't see it taking but an hour more daily to complete. Tanikit
I think if your child is not doing school for the rest of the day (as in this is not afterschooling) then you could do them all. I have found with my child that having a 1/2 day of school in the morning works better for her than trying to fit the same amount in in the afternoon even when she has played all morning and done nothing strenuous, so it can depend on your situation and when the 1/2 day must be fitted in and what other activities are expected of the child. For my first grader even when we have a full day available to us, we never school for more than about 2 hours (read alouds not included as we do many of these at bed time). Yes AAR does recommend it after the first level but I didn't want to do spelling at the time and we just kept going through to AAR3 until I needed a break and decided to open AAS. I didn't realize how easy it would be. I just kept thinking more rules, cards, and tiles! Oh my(My DS was also doing AAR1)! No, not a regular B&M but a program that won't include any of the subjects she'll need in English. So, we'll have to do afternoons and I was thinking we may not be up to more work that time a day. Good advice about the FLL . . . I think I'll hold off on it.
