I have a friend that has twins just our of 3rd going into 4th. They attend private school, have never homeschooled. They are needing to solidify their math skills and reading comprehension. Any recommendations for them?

It needs to be easy for a parent who has no homeschool experience.

Clear teaching of basic skills for 3rd/4th graders.

Thanks!

I was thinking CLE math and maybe Memoria Press Lit Guides.

Daily Reading Comprehension workbook (Evan-Moor--1 grade level above the child's grade) is one thing I used to help improve reading comprehension.  My 5th grader improved significantly by using that every day this year.

As for math, that just takes daily plugging away with a good quality math curriculum, not skipping any problems.  I would recommend including daily flashcard practice of math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, +/- division) as well as math fact speed tests. Not knowing math facts cold is the problem for many kids who struggle with math.

For reading, they may have a phonics deficit and not an actual reading comprehension problem, have them take my nonsense word test (New Elizabethian), reading grade level test, and the MWIA.

For math, I would have them take the ADAM k-7 test and remediate with the links Kahn Academy to start and then Math Mammoth in their areas of weakness.

If it is truly a comprehension problem and they can decode at least 2 grades above grade level, I like these:

Also, some people need to be explicitly taught to read the boring questions first and then go back and read boring passage looking for answers.

The letsgolearn DORA test could identify if there is a vocabulary problem, to fix that I like the 1879 McGuffeys, reading the vocab before and after the passages. The later McGuffeys also have some comprehension questions.

My Grade 3 some with mild autism has trouble with reading comprehension (but reads aloud fluently).  I've been working my way through the reading comprehension apps from Happy Frog Apps. Being apps, they are more fun than workbooks...well, he thinks so...and I like how they target the fundamental skills of reading comprehension.  The first one we started with was the inference one.
