SKL
I ordered some workbooks for Miss A that have reading selections followed by questions (both bubble and written response). I assign one selection at a time, let her do it independently, and then go over it to see what she missed. As needed, I help her figure out what the questions are looking for and how to make the inferences from the text. Initially she would miss about half of the questions, but now she is doing a lot better. I also try to find out what "concepts" they are talking about at school and talk about examples as we go about our business. For example, we had some "compare and contrast" conversations when that came up. Another recommendation I've tried is that after she finishes reading a short book, she is to tell me orally what it was about. We also work on vocabulary. My favorite resource for this is Wordly Wise, but that takes a long time to finish each lesson. There are other workbooks out there with quicker lessons. She still misses the point at times, but it seems to be improving. We will continue this kind of practice over the summer.

My opinion about reading comprehension questions, especially for emerging readers, is probably not helpful so I'll refrain. :\
MistyMountain
My opinion about reading comprehension questions, especially for emerging readers, is probably not helpful so I'll refrain. :\ She is actually a very good reader. She reads fluently reads at higher levels. She has trouble with narration type of stuff and retelling the story too. When I used to do WWE with her she had a hard time with that. I don't know if it is just her age and it is something she will grow out of or if it is something I should work on with her. She has a hard time with focus. The paragraphs she is asked questions on aren't very interesting though. She does enjoy books and reading. Freedom is less than a month away now and I can't wait. It certainly doesn't help that the weather has been beautiful and it is still light at bedtime.
kiwik
While most reading comprehension stuff is pretty stupid our kids need to be able to do it well enough that the teachers don't just blame everything on "poor comprehension".
