  1. 1. Do you use the term aglet and expect all people to know what it means?

bc my teens didn't know what an aglet is.    (I didn't either until they told me.)  Their fencing coach gave them a really hard time last night b/c they didn't know the term.

I am going with the assumption that we are just really stupid, but curiosity has me offering a poll.

FWIW.....we have always just referred to it as that hard plastic thingie.

If it makes you feel any better.  I had a really embarrassing moment in my sophomore year of high school.  I didn't know what the difference between sophomore and junior was. :blushing:   At least I knew what senior meant! :001_rolleyes: It was just one of those things that I never bothered to pay attention to and learn.

I had no idea those things were called an aglet, or even that they had a name. I asked a couple of my friends and they had never heard the word before either. I'm not entirely sure what the difference between a sophomore and a junior is either, but then we don't use those terms around here.

And here I thought I had a relatively robust vocabulary.

O.k. I have never, ever heard that term.  But now I feel so smart because I looked it up and can pass on that knowledge to the kiddos!  Yeah!  My world is complete.... :)

Seriously, though, did the coach discuss this with them at some point?  Why was he expecting them to know this?  I have never heard that term used IRL.

I suspect he gave them a hard time because of Phineas and Ferb, not because the word is common knowledge (at least before P&F sang about it).  I know what it means because of P&F.  I don't call that bit an aglet.  I don't expect anyone else to either.

Yep, complete and total parenting and teaching failure. You should devote the entirety of next year to learning pop culture. Lots of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and HBO. How can you expect them to be productive citizens without a solid foundation in Spongebob, Swamp People, and Game of Thrones?  :001_rolleyes:

Meh...so you aren't up on pop culture cartoons...your kids will survive.   I'm not a fan of P&H, lots of annoying things for kids to emulate.

:iagree:  I couldn't have said it better.

LOL!!   I just asked my dh what he thought it was when he walked through the door.......his response, "a literature course focusing on agriculture."

  Great answer! (Closer than I would have gotten)

I knew what it was before Phineas and Ferb, but P&F made it stick in my kids' heads, and we sing the song all the time--especially when tying our shoes. ;)  I learned about the word aglet in school, I'd assume. I can't remember not knowing what it is.

I know it, but I both watch Phineas and Ferb (best Disney show ever) and do crossword puzzles. I would expect all crossword puzzlers to know it.

I know it from crossword puzzles. It was a very popular answer in my university paper's puzzles. I'll have to ask my kids tomorrow if they know it, which would be from Phineas and Ferb.

I didn't know, but then again no one could accuse me of being the fount of knowledge... I fail as a teacher and parent pretty regularly... I'm tired!

I think my first reaction was to think of some kind of farm animal offspring, like a signet - but now I'm not totally sure I've got that terminology right either... Ok, I had my spelling confused!  Cygnet - baby swan, Signet - official seal.

I'm tired!

Not only do I not know what it is, but we've never heard of Phieas and Ferb.

I do, however, know what telomeres are, and they are often described as being "like the thing on the end of shoelaces." Does that count for anything?

I knew what an aglet was, but I've never heard of nor seen P & F (and I didn't even have the curiosity to click on the link).

I also know what a telomere is and feel that is a little bit more important in our lives.  ;)

I like his definition better!

When my guy started ps in 9th grade he came home annoyed and feeling left out because he didn't know what a Tic Tac was.  We had simply overlooked that super important part of his education (sigh).  Santa has put some in his stocking every year since.

I don't recall knowledge of aglets or Tic Tacs being on any of the standardized tests or college apps though, so hopefully we skated through and our horrid mistakes won't haunt us too much.
