bluebonnetgirl
Can anyone compare Seton's "Our Catholic Legacy" to CHC's "All Ye Lands" for 6th grade history? I would like to use a Cathholic history text, and would like to know which is the most engaging and independent offering and which has the best lesson plans that make it easy on mom! Thanks! Tiramisu
You should check the tables of contents on the Seton site and the Catholic Textbook Project's. All Ye Lands is a world history that includes non-Western countries like India and Japan, but I found its coverage of topics rather shallow. Seton's is the first half of a world history, so I think you might get narrower but deeper coverage. I haven't used any lesson plans with the Catholic Textbook project books. I did have a teacher's manual for one of the Catholic Textbook Project's books but didn't use it very much. They may have a workbook available now, but it's easy to just read the book and answer the questions at the end of the chapter. I think the teacher's guide had study guides, tests, and literature recommendations for each chapter. My oldest really liked these textbooks. My second, not so much. To get Seton's lesson plans, you would have to do a single course enrollment which may cost about $100. But your child could probably be independent once they enrolled. They may even have online tests available. HTH!
AimeeM
To get Seton's lesson plans for the subject, you have to enroll, as the previous poster said. I find Seton to be thorough, but dry. I wouldn't consider it rigorous without the lesson plans for history, as without them it is merely "read this, answer a few questions" - if I'm not mistaken, the lesson plans have discussion topics and writing assignments? I hope someone else chimes in. I have had on hand CSTP's american history (Sea to Shining Sea) and Light to the Nations (World History). All Ye Lands is geography, not history, but from what I've heard, it's the least favorite of the CSTP lot for many.
wapiti
If you are looking for a world history (as opposed to geography), you might look at the first volume of Light to the Nations. On the other hand, if you are looking for a US history, From Sea to Shining Sea would work in 6th gr, IMO.
julie4
For 6th grade we use Our Pioneers & Patriots by Furlong for American History. Actually we spread it over 5th & 6th grade as recommended in MODG.
