3girls4me
Hi ladies, I am really struggling to figure out my writing plans for next year. I will have a 4th grader. My 1st grader will just do WWE1. I have bounced around many ideas, but right now, I'm trying to figure out a way to use Writing and Rhetoric and also some of Brave Writer together. I like the idea of the Arrow - just choosing my own selections. I also think my kids would enjoy the projects in Partnership Writing. We are planning to do R&S grammar. How can I use both of these without being totally overwhelmed? Thanks!!
newhsmom
I have been wondering the exact same thing. Hoping someone has some thoughts.
...................
Well we just got W&R in the mail and it is very slim. Very easy to use, very gentle. The Conent is EXCELLENT. It really makes students think and uses excellent excerpts. However, what I am planning is to combine W&R for a more interesting, somewhat creative approach, and WWE for the straightforward learning-to-get-thoughts-on-paper approach. I don't know anything about Brave Writer. I'm just saying that W&R, at this level, seems like it could be easily combined.
Farrar
I don't know hardly anything about W&R, but I think many of the ideas in BW are really flexible and can be used alongside a lot of programs. We do pretty much everything BW style and I feel like that's basically enough for us (spelling is the only language arts thing we're not doing BW style right now and have a separate program for). However, I think it's fine and great to pick a few things that are from BW to use alongside another program (or programs) and you'll still get a lot out of it. So, doing poetry tea once a week, doing freewriting once a week, or doing the writing project once a month (or all of those) are all good examples of pieces of the program that you can do with something else and make it work. ByGrace3
We are using both. Last semester we did solely Brave Writer-- The Arrow, poetry teas, Friday Free writes, monthly projects. It was a wonderful semester. This semester we did CAP Fable. We intended to keep up with poetry teas, Friday Free writes, and monthly projects . . . but we were not as consistent as I would have liked. Our next year plan (4th grade) Fall: BW The Arrow, poetry teas, Friday Free writes, monthly projects from Partnership Writing Spring: CAP Narrative 1 with poetry teas, Free writes (but not so free-- I plan to tie these into science and history --ie. write everything you can about ______), and monthly projects For the Spring, we will do CAP M-R, BW Free writes once a week or every other week for either science or history, poetry Tuesdays, and Friday we will work on monthly projects. I love BW and CAP has been excellent. We enjoy using them together.
